“I

didn’t know that loving you was the happiest I’ve ever been.” Yep, 🎙 Shawn Mendes continues to be affected by his breakup with 🎙 Camila Cabello. In 🎵 “When You’re Gone”, The 🏆 Grammy-nominated artist reflects on what it’s like to be without the person that you saw all the time.  He notes that this song was written shortly after his breakup, hence, why he’s so vulnerable.  Mendes penned and produced “When You’re Gone” alongside 🎼✍ 🎛 Scott Harris and 🎼✍ 🎛 Jonah Shy.

From the onset, the vulnerability is pronounced.  In the first verse, Mendes sings, “You never know how good you have it, oh / Until you’re starin’ at a picture of the only girl that matters.” He goes on to state he doesn’t want to let go in the pre-chorus and chorus – “So I’m just tryna hold on.” In the second verse, he speaks about needing to cope, but he struggles to do so – things are still fresh, essentially.  In the bridge, Mendes is all over the place emotionally, questioning if his ex needs him, trying to justify the break-up is for the better, and still holding on. Ultimately, the beautiful, voiced singer delivers a well-rounded performance with no shortage of authenticity.  He’s hurting and trying his best to cope.

Final Thoughts 💭

seal clappingOnce again, Shawn Mendes delivers a well-rounded, respectable record.  It’s not surprising that the subject matter is his break-up – that’s what he’s dealing with currently.  Is this his best song? No, but it is another winning addition to his collection that finds him singing incredibly well and being relatable.  All in all, “When You’re Gone” earns my seal of approval.
