Shawn Mendes, Under Pressure [Photo Credit: Universal Music]Shawn Mendes, assisted by Teddy Geiger (Teddy<3), spiritedly cover the Queen classic, “Under Pressure,” originally a Freddie Mercury, David Bowie duet.

“Under Pressure” is among many timeless classics courtesy of Freddie Mercury and the legendary band, Queen. Mercury duets with another icon, David Bowie, on the gem. Keeping it 100, there are few musicians that can hang with Mercury or Bowie – both were truly special. That said, the original “Under Pressure” is one of those ‘untouchable’ songs.  In all honesty, it would take a truly special, transcendent cover/interpretation to even come close to comparing to the original.  Shawn Mendes, who possesses one of the most beautiful, distinct voices in pop music, alongside producer, singer, and songwriter Teddy Geiger (Teddy<3), take on the challenge of covering “Under Pressure.”  Do they succeed? To an extent.

Once again, it’s important to note that Shawn Mendes is special in his own right.  Besides having killer looks that any girl would swoon over, and many guys are rightfully envious of, he can flat-out sing like an angel.  On “Under Pressure,” as always, he sounds beautiful, and gives an expressive performance.  As for Teddy Geiger, she contrasts Mendes with grittier contributions, and continues to have a great voice in her own right (“For You I Will (Confidence)” was my jam back when).  That said, even given the enthusiasm of both accomplished musicians, “Under Pressure” doesn’t quite reach the same highs as the original. Is that really the fault of either musician, who give their all? No.  Basically, it comes down to the fact, that this is Freddie Mercury and Queen, who will never be superseded when it comes to their own, classic songs.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, give Shawn Mendes and Teddy Geiger credit where credit is due.  The enthusiasm and the energy are top-notch.  Mendes gets the nod in regards to vocal prowess IMO, bringing a refreshing, beaming, youthfulness to the record.  Still, the original stands tall.
