“Sweet is the sun / Warm is the rain / June is the month / Free is the day.” Word. Grammy-nominated Canadian singer/songwriter Shawn Mendes has returned! Mendes had a hella successful run with his first three albums: Handwritten (2015), Illuminate (2017), and Shawn Mendes (2018).  His fourth album, Wonder (2020), debuted at no. 1 on the Billboard 200 but didn’t reach the same level of success as the previous three albums.  Shawn arrives nearly four years later, led by singles “Why Why Why” and “Isn’t That Enough”. “Isn’t That Enough” was penned by Mendes, Amy Allen, Ethan Gruska, Mike Sabath, Nate Mercereau, and Scott Harris. Mendes, Harris, Mercereau, and Sabath produced it.

Shawn Mendes, Shawn [📷: Island]Like “Why Why Why”, “Isn’t That Enough” has some country elements. This folksy song features guitar accompaniment as well as harmonica.  The harmonica enhances the backdrop, adding character and color. Mendes sounds top-notch.  His vocals are lovely, expressive, and sincere. He brings the tuneful melodies and poetic lyrics to life.  Anxiety, uncertainty, and a whirlwind of emotions greatly affect Shawn:  “My hands still shakin’ / My mind’s still racin’ / My heart’s still breakin’ in two.” He urges his friends to remain patient with him – he needs time and support to get back together. Mendes gets a lift – musical support – thanks to beautiful vocal layering and harmonies.  “Isn’t That Enough” features simple songwriting yet speaks volumes.  Mendes’ transparency about ‘not being okay’ is admirable.  You’re rooting for him to bounce back better and stronger than before.  The song is stunning.
