Shawn Mendes, Wonder [Photo Credit: Island]Shawn Mendes does a fabulous job foreshadowing what’s to come on Wonder with the brief but potent opener, “Intro.”

It’s rare that an intro gets enough attention from myself that it’s worth reviewing.  That said, when the intro arrives courtesy of the talented Canadian heartthrob Shawn Mendes, well, it’s a different story. At the same time he unveiled “Wonder”, the promo single from his fourth studio album of the same title, he also released “Intro.” Yep, that’s the title, and like many intros, it clocks in at just over a minute.

Despite its brevity, “Intro” features five writers, including Mendes. It’s produced by Kid Harpoon, Nate Mercereau, Scott Harris and Mendes. “Intro” commences with lovely, mysterious piano. Soon enough, Mendes lends his gorgeous, sensitive vocals to the track.  His tone is nothing short of angelic.  Obviously, there are just a select few lyrics – a sole verse to be precise:

“You have a million different faces
But they’ll never understand
Unless you let them in
You’ve been a million different places
So, give yourself a chance to
Get lost in wonderland.”

Few lyrics, but certainly thought provoking if I do say so myself. Following the verse, the production grows fuller and lusher. The sole criticism is that the lush, electronic instrumental that follows the verse could’ve actually lasted longer. I found myself long for more.

Final Thoughts

For just a little more than a minute, “Intro” is pretty sweet.  It certainly does its job of foreshadowing what’s to come on Wonder, specifically the fantastic title track we’ve been privy too.  Honestly, there’s just not that much more to add.  Great vocals, gorgeous production, thought provoking lyrics and a ridiculously handsome guy.  That covers it!
