Canadian pop artist Shawn Hook shines on the reminiscent single, “Reminding Me,” featuring Vanessa Hudgens. Both Hook and Hudgens reminisce on exes.
Believe it or not, there’s more than one pop artist from Canada with the first name Shawn. Yes, ladies and gents, this post is not about Shawn Mendes, but rather, Shawn Hook. Shawn Hook isn’t a big name stateside, but perhaps the 32-year old deserves to be. On his new single, “Reminding Me,” he shows why more people should be talking about him. For good measure, he brings Vanessa Hudgens along for the ride.
First and foremost, Hook has a terrific voice. His tone is simply beautiful as he possesses a formidable tenor. The falsetto is a strong suit, and helps to make “Reminding Me” a captivating pop record. Moving on to Hudgens, she’s always possessed a fantastic voice, despite seeing less success than the likes of Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato. Here, alongside Hook, she excels.
From the start, the vocal chemistry between the two is apparent. Hook sings:
“She keeps reminding me / That you’re still gone / And I’m still lonely.”
Clearly, this is a complicated love situation – more to come on the verses. Hudgens adds her two cents next, singing:
“He keeps reminding me / How good it was / When we were crazy.”
The question is, how good WHAT was? Following what ends up being the chorus, Hook proceeds to sing the first verse. Essentially, he captures the sentiment of the first half of the chorus. What seems to be happening is that Hook isn’t over his ex, but he needs to move on and is trying to do so with a new lover.
“Wine, she’s spitting out the wine / I forgot you left behind / Our favorite cherry red / Oh, love, I know this isn’t love / ‘Cause I’m still thinking of you / While she’s getting undressed / I never should have left.”
The second verse, sung by Hudgens, takes a similar approach, only from a woman’s perspective. Essentially, these two lovers are living through their new flame vicariously to capture their past flame.
Final Thoughts
All in all, “Reminding Me” is a thoughtful, enjoyable love song. Both Shawn Hook and Vanessa Hudgens delivers superb vocal performances. Again, vocal chemistry is a huge contributing factor into the success of this song.
