On the 14th edition of Sunday Refresh, weโre uplifted by Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings performing, โCall on God.โ
W
elcome to Sunday RefreshโIn these times that we live here today / Seems like everything is in your way.โ So true, Sharon Jones, so true. Sadly, the soulful, spirited front woman of
Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings succumbed to cancer at age 60 in November 2016. Even though Jones is no longer walking in the land of the living, she leaves a brilliant catalog of music. One of her best, most emotional, and soul stirring numbers is
โCall on God,โ which appears on the 2017 posthumous album,
Soul of a Woman. Fittingly, โCall on Godโ closes the album finding the artist exhibiting relentless faith. This is incredible given Jonesโ hard-fought battle with cancer, which sheโd ultimately lose.
Yes, Soul of a Woman is a soul-revivalist album, but โCall on Godโ is a gospel-infused, deep/southern soul cut. Jonesโ vocals are incredibly powerful and sincere, as she encourages all to believe, be like, and seek out God. โTo be like Him is what I long to be,โ she sings on the second verse, continuing, โAnd to share His love to eternity.โ Amen! Of course, the crรจme de la crรจme โ the crowning achievement โ is the chorus:
โYou just call, call on God And Heโll be your friend Just call, call on God And Heโll carry you through Call, call on God And He will provide Yes, He will (Yes, He will) Provide For You.โ
At the very end, Jones witnesses โ testifying to Godโs goodness, mercy, and โwonder working power.โ That exemplifies a bold, relentless faith. The song is tailor made for Sunday Refresh โ or a refresh for any day of the week for that matter!
