On the 14th edition of Sunday Refresh, we’re uplifted by Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings performing, “Call on God.”

elcome to Sunday Refresh“In these times that we live here today / Seems like everything is in your way.” So true, Sharon Jones, so true. Sadly, the soulful, spirited front woman of
Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings succumbed to cancer at age 60 in November 2016. Even though Jones is no longer walking in the land of the living, she leaves a brilliant catalog of music. One of her best, most emotional, and soul stirring numbers is
“Call on God,” which appears on the 2017 posthumous album,
Soul of a Woman. Fittingly, “Call on God” closes the album finding the artist exhibiting relentless faith. This is incredible given Jones’ hard-fought battle with cancer, which she’d ultimately lose.
Yes, Soul of a Woman is a soul-revivalist album, but “Call on God” is a gospel-infused, deep/southern soul cut. Jones’ vocals are incredibly powerful and sincere, as she encourages all to believe, be like, and seek out God. “To be like Him is what I long to be,” she sings on the second verse, continuing, “And to share His love to eternity.” Amen! Of course, the crème de la crème – the crowning achievement – is the chorus:
“You just call, call on God And He’ll be your friend Just call, call on God And He’ll carry you through Call, call on God And He will provide Yes, He will (Yes, He will) Provide For You.”
At the very end, Jones witnesses – testifying to God’s goodness, mercy, and ‘wonder working power.’ That exemplifies a bold, relentless faith. The song is tailor made for Sunday Refresh – or a refresh for any day of the week for that matter!
