T
he vibes, the vibes, those Throwback VibezTheme & Lyrics
“Cause I love your smile / I love your smile.”
Shanice was a teenager when she released
“I Love Your Smile.” “I Love Your Smile” is the crowning achievement of her 1991 album,
Inner Child, becoming a big-time pop hit. The R&B single would peak at no. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Notably, since its released, it’s ‘inspired’ numerous new songs per WhoSampled (
Chris Brown,
Silk, and
HRVY among others).
What’s the premise of this infectious contemporary R&B classic? On “I Love Your Smile,” Shanice is into this boy, period. She’s not into class (“I can’t hear the teacher / His books don’t call me at all”), work sucks (“My boss is lame you know / And so is the pay”), but “Hey, said I love your smile.” He makes her happy when nothing else does essentially. Famously, Shanice says, “Blow, Branford, blow,” shouting out the saxophone solo by renowned jazz saxophonist
Branford Marsalis.
Final Thoughts
Ultimately, there is no way you won’t smile while listening to “I Love Your Smile.” This was Shanice’s big moment – her ace in the hole. Even to this day, if you listen to it, it makes you feel good. The nostalgia is real, and again, the influence of this classic is reflected on many new songs. Throwback fancy tickled!
