Shakira has been in the music business for a minute – more than two decades. How shocking is that? Furthermore, it’s hard to believe that the Colombian superstar is in her forties.  It can’t be possible! Nonetheless, the 41-year old, who informed us that her “Hips Don’t Lie” has ‘still got it.’ If for some reason she didn’t have it already, rising 24-year old Columbian reggaetón star Maluma gives her a lift on “Clandestino.”

First things first, it should be noted that “Clandestino” translates into the word clandestine. Perhaps not your everyday word, particularly when it comes to a popular song, Merriam-Webster defines clandestine as something “marked by, held in, or conducted with secrecy.” Notably, the dictionary provides a fitting example of the adjective, pertinent to “Clandestino” – ‘a clandestine love affair.” Basically, Shakira and Maluma are “Secret Lovers” – cue Atlantic Starr.

“Lo nuestro es ilegal y no te voy a negar / Que yo pago la condena por besarte.” Rough translation: “I came to see you, to entertain me / And you stole a kiss from me that you still do not think about giving me back.”  Naturally sung completely in Spanish, Google translate sheds some light on what’s going down.  In the nutshell, secrecy is the key – no need for more flowers on Valentine’s Day.  When ‘Shakira’ leaves, Maluma notes that his body keeps asking for more – hmm wonder what his body desires…  It’s not a new concept – secret love has been covered many times – but Shakira and Maluma have great chemistry.  Beyond the chemistry, they’re backed by an appealing reggaetón backdrop, with slick drums, robust bass line, wavy keyboard, and of course, synths.

Final Thoughts

Language is no barrier on “Clandestino.” Shakira and Maluma make a formidable team, perfectly suited to depict clandestine love. Excellent vocals, excellent vocal chemistry, and sound production work.
