Who are The Shadowboxers? The Shadowboxers are a soul-pop band comprised of Adam Hoffman, Matt Lipkins, and Scott Tyler.  Originally based in Atlanta, the band’s ‘hometown’ is now Nashville – great choice.  The band has been around since 2008, but perhaps 2017 represents ‘their time.’ They drop a hot new single fittingly titled, “Hot Damn!” All in all, one listen to “Hot Damn!” will make you say, “hot damn,” or something like that.

The first thing that stands out about “Hot Damn!” – aside from the title – is the production.  The sound can be characterized by throwback qualities. Even so, there are also plenty of modern cues. A consistency throughout “Hot Damn!” is its superb groove.  The production evolves over the course of the song. It’s slick, yet not overproduced.  In fact, the production doesn’t feel truly ‘busy’ until the layering at the end.

Besides the production, “Hot Damn!” features excellent vocals that are nuanced and soulful, without being over-sung.  Lovely falsetto adds to the ripeness, not to mention the tongue-n-cheek sensibilities. The vibes are sexy without being offensive or going too far left.

Final Thoughts

Overall, “Hot Damn” ends up being an enjoyable, energetic pop-soul joint. It’s an ambitious record, but ultimately, intriguing.  More folks need to ‘be in the know’ about The Shadowboxers.
