3 out of 5 stars

R&B up-and-comer Sevyn Streeter delivers a hip-hop/club-oriented joint with “Prolly,” which arrives ahead of Streeter’s unnamed full-length debut.

Sevyn Streeter is in the process of releasing her full-length debut.  Streeter has been around for a few years, but has yet to deliver a game-changing hit.  While “Prolly” has potential, it’s difficult to envision the latest single with Gucci Mane excelling at radio.

“Prolly” is clubby, embracing a hip-hop oriented sound. Although filled with swagger, it’s more predictable than not. It takes only a short time to realize “Prolly” is more sound than substance.  Transcendence and “the bigger picture” isn’t the M.O. by any means. At least a simple, yet catchy hook is a selling point.

“Did I got too far tonight? / I don’t know, prolly / Did I almost start a fight? / I don’t know prolly”

Like the production and overall song, Sevyn’s lead vocals ooze in swagger and sexiness.  “Prolly” benefits from Sevyn’s feistiness.  She has plenty of attitude to go around.  More surprising than Sevyn is Gucci Mane. Have Gucci’s raps ever sounded this clear? Usually, he’s is a bit harder to decipher.

Final Thoughts

“Prolly” is sound, but cliché and indistinct.  There are plenty of records like this one.  Arguably the biggest rub against Sevyn is the fact that she doesn’t show off the capabilities of her voice.   Regardless, it is well produced, which counts for something.
