Pop singer Selena Gomez returns in reflective mode on single, “Lose You to Love Me” where she parts ways with a lover to ultimately learn to love herself.
“I saw the signs and I ignored it / Rose-colored glasses all distorted / Set fire to my purpose / And I let it burn / You got off on the hurtin’ / When it wasn’t yours.” Okay! It’s been a quiet few years from pop artist Selena Gomez on the music front. Yes, she’s released some singles here and there but there’s been little movement in regard to releasing a new studio album. The last album by Ms. Gomez, as of publication time, arrived four years ago, in 2015. That is when Gomez unleashed Revival, which featured hits including “Good for You” and “Hands to Myself.” While a new album hasn’t been announced as of publication date, she’s released a couple of new singles set to appear on the new project: “Lose You to Love Me” and “Look at Her Now.”
Ballads and Selena Gomez aren’t always a ‘match made in heaven’ – no shade of course. That said, things work out okay on “Love You to Love Me,” which runs a respectable thee-and-a-half minutes in duration. Ultimately, the record is not too long and not too short. Vocals have always been one of my issues regarding Gomez – call it a rub. She’s actually admitted herself she’s not the best vocalist, which also elevates my respect level because she’s honest. On this particular single, she sounds respectable, not doing too much nor playing too subtle. The performance is balanced, suiting the piano and pad-driven backdrop well. Furthermore, on the chorus, she gets a boost from backing vocals, elevating the intensity level.
Final Thoughts
Is “Lose You to Love Me” the most exciting pop song that has arrived in 2019? That would be an emphatic NO but, there are plenty of things to like about it by all means, as aforementioned. Additionally, the message made by Gomez is thoughtful and quite relatable – she had to end a relationship to find and truly love herself. Ultimately, it works out well for her.
