Salt ๐Ÿง‚: 5ive Songs No. 70 [๐Ÿ“ท: 4AD, Atlantic, Brent Faulkner, Capitol Nashville, The Musical Hype, Pixabay, RCA]On this edition of 5ive Songs, we select five songs that are associated with SALT ๐Ÿง‚ in some form or fashion.

On 5ive Songs, we (I) keep things short and sweet โ€“ no extra calories or needless fluff.  Thereโ€™s a topic, five songs, and a short blurb that doesnโ€™t exceed a paragraph.  Yes, itโ€™s a playlist, but itโ€™s a miniature playlist that shouldnโ€™t take much time to consume.  On this edition of 5ive Songs, we select five songs that are associated with SALT ๐Ÿง‚ in some form or fashion.

1. Mickey Guyton, โ€œSaltโ€ ๐Ÿง‚

๐Ÿ’ฟ Bridges (EP) โ€ข ๐Ÿท Capitol Nashville โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2020

Mickey Guyton, Bridges (EP) [๐Ÿ“ท : Capitol Nashville]โ€œSheโ€™s got you blind, but I see it all / You think youโ€™re getting sugar / But boy, youโ€™re getting salt.โ€ Oh snap!  ๐ŸŽต โ€œSaltโ€ ๐Ÿง‚ appears as the penultimate number on ๐Ÿ’ฟ Bridges, the debut EP by ๐Ÿ† Grammy-nominated country singer, ๐ŸŽ™ Mickey Guyton.  Here, on this thrilling, country-pop joint with ample crossover appeal, Guyton delivers a brief but compelling tale where this guy is involved with a girl thatโ€™s nothing but trouble. Much like on her song that earned her the Grammy nomination (๐ŸŽต โ€œBlack Like Meโ€ ), Guyton serves up a great, well-rounded vocal performance.  Furthermore, she brings plenty of attitude and personality to this salty track.

2. Aesop Rock, โ€œSaltโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Spirit World Field Guide โ€ข ๐Ÿท Rhymesayers Entertainment LLC โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2020

Aesop Rock, Spirit World Field Guide [๐Ÿ“ท : Rhymesayers Entertainment]โ€œThatโ€™s a unique wind / Spun a whip out in the snow / Really ainโ€™t got shit / Your condition is not a condition we know.โ€ Despite being underrated, underground rapper ๐ŸŽ™ Aesop Rock (Ian Matthias Bavitz) is absolutely and utterly awesome.  I dare you to argue otherwise! If youโ€™ve been one of many folks whoโ€™ve underrated this gem of a rapper, look no further than ๐ŸŽต โ€œSaltโ€ ๐Ÿง‚, the salty standout from his 2020 album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Spirit World Field Guide.  You definitely wonโ€™t leave salty after you hear the hard-knocking beat and kick a$$ rhymes Aesop delivers.  This isnโ€™t merely rap, itโ€™s poetry, with numerous top-rate one-liners.  Rarely do you hear the likes of โ€œDorm like a door to Hell, the doorbell plays Tapsโ€ or cleverer, โ€œRavens deliver him tinketry in eternal damnation / I make disturbing the stasis a game to beat when the mania boils.โ€ Can you say, ๐ŸŽค๐Ÿ’ง!!!

3. Ava Max, โ€œSaltโ€ ๐Ÿง‚

๐Ÿ’ฟ Heaven & Hell โ€ข ๐Ÿท Atlantic โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2020

Ava Max, Heaven & Hell [๐Ÿ“ท : Atlantic]โ€œIโ€™m all out of salt, Iโ€™m not gonna cry / Wonโ€™t give you what you want / โ€˜Cause I look way too good tonight.โ€ Hell yeah, ๐ŸŽ™ Ava Max! On ๐ŸŽต โ€œSaltโ€ ๐Ÿง‚, a highlight from Maxโ€™s 2020 debut album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Heaven & Hell, she shows incredible resilience.  Sheโ€™s had her heart broken, yet, at this point, โ€œsheโ€™s all cried out,โ€ you might say.  Rather than continue to be downtrodden about this lame-a$$ guy, sheโ€™s on the up-and-up, feeling herself, knowing sheโ€™s better than the way she was treated.  After all, on this sleek, ๐ŸŽ™ Cirkut produced bop, sheโ€™s โ€œgot her thigh-highs oon, feel like Wonder Woman,โ€ plus her โ€œLipstick pops and she feels like Monroe.โ€ You go girl!

4. The National, โ€œI Should Live in Saltโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Trouble Will Find Me โ€ข ๐Ÿท 4AD โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2013

The National, Trouble Will Find Me [๐Ÿ“ท: 4AD]โ€œI should live in salt for leaving you behind, behindโ€ Interesting ๐ŸŽ™ Matt Berninger โ€“ very interesting. Hmm, what does it even mean? Well, on ๐ŸŽต โ€œI Should Live in Salt,โ€ the opener from ๐Ÿ’ฟ Trouble Will Find Me, ๐ŸŽ™ The National front man states the song is about his younger brother, per Under the Radar: โ€œI think the song is a reflection on our relationship, and some of it is my guilt or feeling that he went in a different direction than I did.โ€ Notably, Berninger repeats the phrase, โ€œYou should know me better than that,โ€ throughout song, which clearly showcases a relationship component.  Besides the theme and lyrics, โ€œI Should Live in Saltโ€ is a gorgeous song with a rich palette of sounds within the backdrop that feels and sounds quite organic.  As always, Berninger sounds terrific.

5. Tinashe, โ€œSaltโ€ ๐Ÿง‚

๐Ÿ’ฟ Joyride โ€ข ๐Ÿท RCA โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2018

Tinashe, Joyride [๐Ÿ“ท: RCA]๐ŸŽต โ€œSaltโ€ ๐Ÿง‚ is a surefire contender for the crowning achievement of ๐Ÿ’ฟ Joyride, the sophomore album by ๐ŸŽ™ Tinashe. Yep, this sodium-fueled ballad is a terrific breakup record. She shows off her full complement of vocal abilities, singing in her lower register and gradually ascending into that awesome, commanding upper register.  ๐ŸŽ™ Soundz does a masterful job crafting a truly dark, emotional, minor-key backdrop for her to paint over as she urges, โ€œSo when you go and break my heart in two / Donโ€™t throw SALT ๐Ÿง‚ on the wound.โ€
