American Actress-singer Sabrina Carpenter and English DJ-producer Jonas Blue join forces for enjoyable dance-pop record, “Alien.”
18-year old actress and pop singer Sabrina Carpenter returns with a new single, “Alien.” She’s not alone for this one, paired with 28-year old English DJ and producer, Jonas Blue. The duo keeps things relatively “short and sweet” on “Alien,” which clocks in at under three minutes. There’s a vibe from the jump, with finger snaps, falsetto by Carpenter, and an inviting, cool backdrop courtesy of Blue. Though initially light, the intensity of “Alien” picks up, particularly on the record’s centerpiece, the chorus.
“Don’t let me leave when I’m standing at your door
Don’t make me stop when you’re really wanting more
When you’re really wanting more
If you show me what you were thinking of
Let me get inside your mind
If you show me love it’ll be enough
It’ll be a better night.”
The form of the record is strong: verse, pre-chorus, chorus, and of course, the drop/post-chorus section.
For the most part, “Alien” is sound through and through. Carpenter delivers sound vocals, perfectly suited for a dance-pop record like this one. Are the vocals themselves game changing? No, but again, her pipes are suited for the style and this particular track. As aforementioned, Jonas Blue does a sensational job of establishing mood and vibe and elevating the intensity by the arrival of the chorus. The production, much like Carpenter’s vocals, is sound – enjoyable and pleasant. Calling the backdrop utterly sublime, much like asserting Carpenter gives a game changing performance, would be overkill.
Final Thoughts
Wrapping things up, “Alien” is a good record, simply put. Roles are successfully fulfilled and boxes are checked off. The main objection is that beyond meeting expectations, the record doesn’t exceed them. That’s nitpick central, but with so many dance-pop, EDM singles out there, being truly distinct is incredibly important. Personally, IMO, for all its pros, “Alien” could’ve used a tad more oomph to achieve greatness. Still, it’s good and worth spinning. Get it Sabrina and Jonas!
