Sabrina Carpenter, Almost Love [Photo Credit: Hollywood]Teen actress and pop artist Sabrina Carpenter surprises on her infectious, ‘relatively’ innocent single about her desires, “Almost Love.”

Last time we heard from teen actress and pop singer Sabrina Carpenter, she was from outer space.  Okay, okay, just kidding.  She wasn’t really from outer space, but she did have an other-worldly song alongside Jonas Blue, “Alien”, which also happens to appear on our playlist, 17 Songs Inspired by Outer Space…To an Extent.  But enough plugs about aliens, Carpenter is back with a topic equally relatable for the adolescent as well as the fully mature adult – love.  In this case it’s not love, but it’s “Almost Love.”

On the first verse, Sabrina Carpenter sings about moments, for three out of the four lines – “The moment when the light is red before the go” for example. She ends the verse asserting, “That’s how I feel before I get you alone.”  On the pre-chorus, she expresses her eagerness for love, or perhaps something a bit steamier, if we read into lyrics like “When we could push all the limits” and “Shirt hanging off my shoulders.” On the chorus, the passion becomes ‘really real,’ as she sings:

“Can you feel the tension rising?

Now you’re, now you’re getting it close…

Almost love, it’s almost love

Speed this up ‘cause I’m excited

No more, no more taking it slow…

Almost love, it’s almost love…”

Ooh la la.  Instead of moments on the second verse, Carpenter lays out what she wants (“I want you like a midnight hour wants a view”).  From there on out, “Almost Love” plays out much like it’s depicted above.  Fittingly, this well-produced pop record is set in a minor key, and naturally, Carpenter sings it playfully and sensually.  Her feistiness and attitude help make this joint stand out.

Final Thoughts

Don’t ever prejudge a single because you might be pleasantly surprised upon hearing it.  That’s the case with “Almost Love.” Going in, I didn’t expect Sabrina Carpenter to deliver as well as she does, nor for the song to be as infectious as it is.  While my life isn’t changed, and most listeners lives likely won’t either, hard not to call this relatively innocent record of longing and desire a B-O-P.
