For the 13th Thankful Song
, we highlight โFlowers at the Door,โ where LGBTQ+ artist Ryan Beatty is thankful for pleasure.
โDraw on the pages, I wonโt erase it / I want your mark on me, eternal.โ Clearly, Ryan Beatty is totally feeling โsome type of wayโ about him! Before we dig into this โdepartureโ of sorts, let me remind you the premise of Thankful Songs
! On Thankful Songs
, we highlight songs in which the musician (or musicians) show gratitude about something or towards someone. This idea came from the fact that in November, here in the United States of America, many Americans celebrate Thanksgiving. So, what better way than to celebrate than select some awesome songs that exhibit gratitude? Our 13th entry comes from the openly gay pop artist with
โFlowers at the Doorโ from his underrated 2020 album,
Dreaming of David.
Cutting straight to the chase, while the aforementioned lyrical excerpt also suggests a deep connection with a partner, โFlowers at the Doorโ seems to be most thankful about a hot, freaky sexual experience. Here, that sexual experience is artfully executed sans profanity for that matter. That said, lyrically, itโs clear that Ryan Beatty isnโt the least bit โinnocent.โ Key lyrics from the first verse include the brilliant โOur heads connected, I got the message / You had your hands around my skull,โ and โI look up to you when Iโm below.โ Ponder it, and you realize itโs poetically portraying oral โpleasure.โ The chorus extends upon the โhappening,โ as Beatty sensually asks, โWhy donโt you turn me around?โ (aka hit it from the back to quote the rappers). The bridge also sheds some light: โWhatโs so wrong with wanting more? / Rollinโ on the hardwood floor.โ Clearly, heโs thankful for the bouquet of flowers received at the door, and canโt wait for moreโฆ
