So, without further ado, on the 6th edition of LGBTQ Bopz 🌈🎶 (2022), we highlight 🎵 “Gay Messiah” performed by 🎙 Rufus Wainwright.

Theme & Lyrics

“He will then be reborn / From 1970s porn / Wearing tube socks with style / And such an innocent smile.” Okay 😬 … Anyways, the intersection of faith and sexuality is, quote, ‘a whole thing.’  Keeping it real, homosexuality and Christianity have a complicated relationship.  Sure, SOME religions and churches have become more receptive to the idea that LGBTQ members can worship without discrimination and be condemned to hell, while others are still, um, not open to it whatsoever.  🎙 Rufus Wainwright certainly manages to put what’s considered ‘two different worlds’ together on his song, 🎵 “Gay Messiah.”

“Better pray for your sins

Better pray for your sins

‘Cause the gay messiah’s coming.”

Bitmoji ImageHmm, the gay messiah? Not familiar with this deity, that’s for sure! This gem from 💿 Want Two (2004) is unapologetically GAY intact with some double entendre.  For the evangelicals and fundamentalists who’ve never happened to hear this record, well, they’re sure to be pissed off! The words GAY and MESSIAH are placed in the same sentence – UNACCEPTABLE! Furthermore, those two unlikely words are mentioned side by side – JESUSSS!  Oh, it gets gayer and more blasphemous, folks! Examine the bridge and those who aren’t open-minded or don’t understand gay culture will cry foul:

“No, it will not be me

Rufus the Baptist I be

No, I won’t be the one

Baptized in cum.” 👿

Wow, Rufus, WOW! Oh, and for good measure, he continues, “What will happen instead / Someone will demand my head.” 🍆 💦

Final Thoughts 💭

Bitmoji ImageRegardless of how you feel about the blasphemy Rufus Wainwright shoots out and unloads – poor choices of words – “Gay Messiah” is clever.  He sings well, as to be expected, but the lyrics, in all their gayness and scandalous nature to devout believers who aren’t allies, are the crowning achievement.  Worth noting, I mentioned “Gay Messiah” briefly on a 2021 compendium, 🎧 15 Utterly Thrilling, GAY Songs.
