ROLE MODEL continues to elevate his profile on “going out,” the compelling third single from his 2020 EP, our little angel.
“Don’t hit me if you’re goin’ out / I can barely leave the house / Mood is always movin’ south / And you don’t know what that’s about.” Word! ROLE MODEL (Tucker Pillsbury) has established himself as one of pop’s intriguing rising stars. He’s fresh and definitely separates himself from his contemporaries. Listening to his music and observing his presence in his music videos, it’s easy to want to be him, particularly given that youthful energy. Ahead of his EP, our little angel, Pillsbury drops his third single, “going out.”
Produced by Spencer Stewart and Stint, “going out” sounds like a fresh blend of pop with some hip-hop sensibilities. I am in no way characterizing this to be hip-hop – it wouldn’t fly on urban radio – but it also goes beyond slightly beyond pop. As always, Pillsbury delivers colorful vocals with, what I’d dub a cool vibe. He has plenty of personality and swagger, yet he’s chill and doesn’t seem to get too high or too low. There are a number of interesting lyrics throughout the verses that confirm coolness, yet also bring some emo vibes (sans the whiny vocals). On the first verse, ROLE MODEL serves up the gem:
“Homies sent the address to the strip club Girls pay 20K just for a lift up The typa’ girl that makes the boys do sit ups.”
We also get cool ‘anti-cool’ on the second verse, with the likes of, “When all the other boys are getting thrown out / Dudes be hella rude so I don’t go out.”
Final Thoughts
Have I mentioned that ROLE MODEL is a pretty cool dude? While “going out” likely won’t change your life, it will enhance your playlist – guaranteed. This is a well-produced pop joint with a dash of hip-hop/urban, a unique personality, and a pretty awesome chorus (excerpted at the top). Not the second coming mind you, but Tucker is indeed a rising star.
