R&B/Blue-eye soul standout Robin Thicke Delivers an enjoyable set of pop-soul cuts on āBlurred Lines,ā which is no āone trick pony.ā
Ubiquitous summer hit āBlurred Linesā rewrote the script for what couldāve been a horrid narrative for blue-eyed soul singer/songwriter Robin Thicke. The suave, falsetto-loving dude had a flop on his hands with Love After War (2011). I was onboard for some of it, but unfortunately, that just didnāt cut it for ole boy. However in 2013, the year of the underdog, āBlurred Linesā made Robin Thicke the āR&B singer that could,ā and he does on his sixth album, Blurred Lines. Delivering a enjoyable set of pop-soul cuts, Blurred Lines is no āone trick ponyā. There are many tricks with the majority of those tricks being pretty awesome.
āBlurred Linesā
āBlurred Linesā is as good within the context of the album as it was when Thicke shocked the world with his NSFW video, prancing around with nude girls. Itās pretty freaking infectious, despite the critical divisiveness it has incited. Itās that gimmicky, novelty cut you should write off, but itās really too good to do so.
āIām gon take a good girl / I know you want it / I know you want it / I know you want it / Youāre a goo girl girl / Canāt let it get past me / Youāre far from plastic / Talk about getting blastedā¦ā
Hmm, let me catch myself before it gets stuck in my head for the umpteenth time. Pharrell assists vocally while T.I. raps as well, but does it matter and do we care? Robinās the star baby, and according to the unrated version of the video, he has a bigā¦
āTake It Easy On Meā has to follow a juggernaut and thatās no simple task. Thankfully, it doesnāt slack, placing Thicke against a danceable, modern-pop cut thatās also soulful enough not to offend the āLost Without Uā crowd. He is definitely infatuated though as he sings āIām fascinated by your stare / Iāll rip through all your fancy clothes / I wanna shop for your underwear /I wanna do it all so coldā¦ā as well as āBaby I get that youāre one badass chick / But Iām that guyā¦ā Heās trying hard, really hard. He keeps dancing, but also manages to be chill on āOoo La La.ā We all know he has one of the smoothest, sensual falsettos out there, but itās nice on this particular cut to hear that mid-/lower-register shine on the ad libs. Yeah he croons, but he also shows he can roar when he wants to. Roar on brother, roar on.
āAināt No Hat 4 Thatā
āAināt No Hat 4 Thatā is brief and a bit tongue-in-cheek, but Thicke eats cuts like that up. Itās no āBlurred Lines,ā but it has the same sort of modern, yet throwback flare. āGet In My Wayā continues on stunningly, noted for its fine production work and Thickeās clear, relaxed pipes. āCome on letās go aināt nobody gonna get in my way / Iām gonna make it, no matter what you say / Iām flying by you, better stay on your laneā¦aināt nobody gonna get in my way.ā OK Robin, we got you!
Template for making a hit with credibility? Add darling Compton rapper Kendrick Lamar. Sure enough, the results are swell on āGive It 2 U,ā a song I was initially like uh⦠Hearing it once more, specifically contextually within the album, Iām on board, for the most part. I mean itās shallow adulation (āHey girl / You know youāre lookinā so damn fine / Youāre lookin like you fell from the sky / You know you make a grown man cryā) as it leads to āI wanna give it to you, through the night / And make everything you fantasize come true, ooh baby.ā Thicke is looking for a hookup more than anything else, but who am I to judge?
Follow-up āFeel Goodā most definitely does so ā good enough that āIāll give all my loving to you.ā Ha! A cool feature? Thickeās inquisitive lyrical approach on the verses, such as āIf I gave you all my loving would you give it back?ā Pop-soul dance cuts seem to fit him well.
āGo Stupid 4 Uā
āGo Stupid 4 Uā epitomizes its silly title. Basically, Thicke is digging so hard on this chick that she āGive a boy a heart attack call the ambulanceā¦ā Mr. Suave is not so slick on his wordplay through lyrics āGirl I wrote a song about you / Designed a little part that reminds me of your ass,ā where the physical seems to outweigh anything more. Thankfully, he gets it together on the lovely āFor The Rest of My Life,ā which is classic, neo-soul/blue-eyed soul at its best.
āFor the rest of my life you know Iām gonna be yours / For the rest of your life you know I wanna be here.ā
More gentlemanlike than a line about the derriere, right? Penultimate cut āTop of the Worldā is āfeel-good,ā though doesnāt quite match the elite cuts. āThe Good Lifeā closes with some old-school charm, but wouldāve benefited for a wee bit more development. Thicke do sang thoā ā mad ad libs bro! LOL.
Final Thoughts
Ultimately, Blurred Lines is a welcome addition to the R&B or pop collection. Thicke straddles both genres and comes out on top. Vocally he sounds incredibly polished and even manages to let loose. Sure, he āgoes stupidā every now and again, but donāt all guys go stupid for girls? #Rhetorical! Blue-eyed soul is having a monster 2013.
Gems: āBlurred Lines,ā āTake It Easy On Me,ā āGive It 2 U,ā āFeel Goodā & āFor The Rest of My Lifeā
