It only takes ONE hit to solidify a musical legacy 💯! On 1 Hit WONDERful, we highlight songs that were the SOLE hit by a given musician.  It is possible that the artists appearing on this list earned a minor hit or two, BUT for the most part, that ONE hit earned them recognition. So, in the 41st edition of 1 Hit WONDERful (2024), we dive into “Chill Bill”,  the one-hit wonder by Rob $tone.

In 2016, San Diego rapper Rob $tone delivered a stoner anthem for all-time: “Chill Bill”. Kicking ass and taking names on the shallow, weed-touting chorus, $tone continues, “‘I got some loud but no money, babe, buy me a Fiji’ (Water) / She said, ‘You need a job,’ bitch, fuck a job, I still get cheese.” Gah-day-um! One of the most crucial parts of this one-hit wonder is the whistle, sampled from “Twisted Nerve” by Bernard Herrmann. Per Lauren Nostro of Genius, the whistle sample has a long history. Purp Dogg produced this high AF gem for $tone, anchoring the whistle with a thudding kick.

boxing$tone played a pivotal role in the top 40 success of “Chill Bill.” Peaking at no. 29 on the Billboard Hot 100 is not too shabby.  Unfortunately for $tone, that was his only charting song on the pop charts. $tone’s San Diego contemporaries J. Davi$ and Spooks up the ante on the infectious, potent joint… pun intended! Aggressive rhymes from all three rappers complement the kick and whistle. $tone raps about giving up lean in the first verse: “Used to sip out Styrofoam but figured I should stick to dro.” Lean is far more dangerous than wacky tobaccy (RIP Toby Keith).  “Two cell phones, Mr. Motherfuck A Thot (A Thot),” J. Davi$ spits confidently in the second verse, adding, “I’m with your bitch, she on my jock / Ain’t got no time to love a thot.” Spooks brings clever wordplay in the third verse: “If your lil’ fuckboy lame ass wanna creep (Hoe) / I live by the lemon ‘cause that fucker chose me.” “Chill Bill” may be $tone’s sole pop hit, but it’s a damn good one! Still potent AF!
