Roaring 20s: 5ive Songs No. 6 (2021) [๐Ÿ“ท : Brent Faulkner, The Musical Hype, Pixabay]On this edition of 5ive Songs, we select five songs that are associated with ROARING 20s or being in your 20s in some form or fashion.

On 5ive Songs, we (I) keep things short and sweet โ€“ no extra calories or needless fluff.  Thereโ€™s a topic, five songs, and a short blurb. Yes, itโ€™s a playlist, but itโ€™s a miniature playlist that shouldnโ€™t take much time to consume.  On this edition of 5ive Songs, we select five songs that are associated with ROARING 20s or being in your 20s in some form or fashion.

1. Flo Milli, โ€œRoaring 20sโ€

๐ŸŽต โ€œRoaring 20sโ€ โ€ข ๐Ÿท RCA โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2021

Flo Milli, "Roaring 20s" [๐Ÿ“ท: RCA]โ€œStupid shit, itโ€™s just a double standard / I made my own lane, and I took advantage (Flo Milli shit) โ€ฆโ€ Rapper ๐ŸŽ™ Flo Milli impresses, exhibiting ample attitude over a ๐Ÿ“ฝ Fiddler on the Roof sample (๐ŸŽต โ€œIf I Were a Rich Manโ€) on her short but sweet banger, ๐ŸŽต โ€œRoaring 20sโ€. Itโ€™s pretty sick the way that Flo and the trap beat change up the flow from the introductory sample.

Her voice rises above the backdrop in commanding fashion, with the agility and confidence of her flow being an additional selling point. She serves up a mix of melodic rap and un-pitched rhymes.  Further providing fuel for the fire is nice production work courtesy of ๐ŸŽ›๏ธ Kenny Beats who doesnโ€™t have to do much, anchoring the sample with a tight trap beat. With no glaring cons, perhaps the sole con is that it would be nice if this brief banger were a bit more developed.

Nonetheless, Iโ€™ll leave you with a few more โ€˜profoundโ€™ lines from Flo:

โ€œYou canโ€™t hate on pussy if it rule the planet (Yeah, yeah)
I just came in the game and I'm doinโ€™ damage (If I was a rich man).โ€

2. H.E.R., โ€œ21โ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ I Used to Know Her โ€ข ๐Ÿท RCA โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2019

H.E.R., I Used to Know Her: The Prelude [๐Ÿ“ท : RCA]โ€œAfter-show afterparty, orange juice and Bacardi / Iโ€™m old enough, I made enough to move to Abu Dhabi / And who could stop me?โ€ On ๐ŸŽต โ€œ21โ€ (๐Ÿ’ฟ I Used to Know Her), ๐Ÿ† Grammy-winner ๐ŸŽ™ H.E.R. is real, reflective, and manages to deliver a R&B bop in the process.  She manages to keep old-school alive, while simultaneously sounding contemporary and fresh. โ€œ21โ€ has a soulful, throwback vibe with its robust bass line, smooth guitars, and dusty drum groove (produced by H.E.R., ๐ŸŽ›๏ธ Walter Jones, and ๐ŸŽ›๏ธ King Michael Coy).  Focusing on the songwriting, H.E.R. reflects on her career, which started at an incredibly young age, and reaching โ€˜adulthoodโ€™ โ€“ 21. Notably, on the second verse, she mentions hard work paying off ultimately (โ€œCanโ€™t cheat the grindโ€).

The recordโ€™s crown jewel, of course, is the gorgeous, incredibly honest chorus:

โ€œNo everybody not made for this life
I wouldnโ€™t trade it for the world
Iโ€™m 21 now, oh Iโ€™m 21.โ€

3. Panic! At the Disco, โ€œRoaring 20sโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Pray for the Wicked โ€ข ๐Ÿท Fueled By Ramen โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2018

Panic! At the Disco, Pray for the Wicked ยฉ Fueled by Ramen๐ŸŽต โ€œRoaring 20sโ€ appears on ๐Ÿ’ฟ Pray for the Wicked, the 2018 album by alternative collective โ€“ really more one-man-band these days โ€“ ๐ŸŽ™ Panic! At the Disco. โ€œRoaring 20sโ€ is a heavily rhythmic record thatโ€™s big-band styled nature is reminiscent of ๐ŸŽต โ€œCrazy=Geniusโ€ from ๐Ÿ’ฟ Death of a Bachelor.  Furthermore, the influence of ๐ŸŽ™ Brendon Urieโ€™s participation in the Broadway musical ๐ŸŽญ Kinky Boots is highly evident.

As always, the lyrics are intriguing, balancing both a 1920s vibe and exemplifying the twenty-something/post-twenty-something lifestyle.  โ€œThis is my roaring, roaring 20s,โ€ Urie sings on the chorus, later adding, โ€œRoll me like a blunt โ€˜cause I wanna go home.โ€ ๐Ÿšฌ

4. Sabrina Carpenter, โ€œPushing 20โ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Singular: Act II โ€ข ๐Ÿท Hollywood โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2019

Sabrina Carpenter, Singular Act II [๐Ÿ“ท : Hollywood]โ€œYou got a way, youโ€™re messing with my faith / Youโ€™re tryna paint a picture but youโ€™re running out of paint / You had your say โ€˜til I took it away / Out of yours in my controllaโ€ฆโ€ Actress and pop singer ๐ŸŽ™ Sabrina Carpenter released the fierce, sleek new single, ๐ŸŽต โ€œPushing 20โ€ in advance of 20th birthday.  The single ultimately appeared on her 2019 nine-track project, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Singular: Act II. This sleek joint, produced by ๐ŸŽ›๏ธ Oak, features a hard-nosed beat and sharp synths. Rebellious, youthful spirit are all captured within his backdrop.  Carpenter eats it up, singing swagger-laden lyrics, heavily influenced by hip-hop culture, and giving off โ€˜that attitude.โ€™

The centerpiece is definitely the unapologetic chorus that portrays Carpenter as one fierce, nearly 20-year-old:

โ€œIโ€™m pushing 20, got no time for others
Iโ€™m pushing 20, got no time for others
Who ainโ€™t on the same wave, yeah, on the same page?
Tryna tell me what to be, yeah. Tell me what to think.โ€

5. Vampire Weekend, โ€œ2021โ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Father of the Bride โ€ข ๐Ÿท Sony โ€ข ๐Ÿ“… 2019

Vampire Weekend, Father of the Bride [๐Ÿ“ท : Sony Music]โ€œ2021, will you think about me? / I could wait a year, but I couldnโ€™t wait three / I donโ€™t wanna be (boy)โ€ฆโ€ ๐ŸŽ™ Vampire Weekend released one of the finest shorter songs youโ€™ll ever hear with  ๐ŸŽต โ€œ2021โ€, which appears on their ๐Ÿ† Grammy-winning comeback album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Father of the Bride. โ€œ2021โ€ samples Japanese musician ๐ŸŽ™ Haruomi Hosono, making the music incredibly intriguing. Adding to the greatness are vocal contributions from ๐ŸŽ™ Jenny Lewis, specifically on the memorable, โ€œBoy, boy.โ€

๐ŸŽ™ Ezra Koenig remains a force himself, sounding absolutely beautiful on the sole, repeated verse, partially excerpted above. He sings the verse up an octave the second time. Despite its brevity and simplicity, โ€œ2021โ€ remains jam-packed and complex โ€“ gorgeous and well-produced.  The songwriting conveys a deeper meaning, focusing on perceptions and remembrance in the future.
