Grammy-nominated R&B artist Ro James impresses on his expressive new single, “Excuse Me,” which dabbles in relationship issues.
“You had it easy but you just couldn’t play your part / Our heart was starving while you focused on so many parts.” Uh oh – seems like Ro James is singing about some relationship issues on his new single, “Excuse Me.” Just in case you didn’t know, you totally need the Grammy-nominated R&B singer in your life, specifically on your playlist. Take one listen to “Excuse Me,” and you’ll totally see why.
From the onset, the production gives off soulful vibes: electric piano, guitar, and generally, an 80s feel and sensibility. Whether intentional or not, the influence of Prince is clear early on. Ro James has a stellar instrument on his hands; his tone of voice is awe-inspiring. He ranges from being utterly smooth, to showcasing grit, and a ripe falsetto. Notably, he sounds more assertive on the second verse, a testament to the thoughtful pacing of “Excuse Me.” On the chorus, there’s also Prince influence, vocally. Doesn’t hurt that James has a terrific chorus to work with.
“So, excuse me, what’s your problem? / Why you so mad? You’re crazy, babe / Excuse me, you must be out your mind, baby / But you got the right one this time, I / You got me f**ked up.”
One more note… Love the harmonic changes on the bridge, which clearly separates itself from the verses and the chorus.
Final Thoughts
Simply put, R&B needs more of this. “Excuse Me” is an awesome mix of old-school and modern urban contemporary music. It appeals to an older generation of R&B listeners (save for the f-bombs), while also appealing to the younger generation. Well-produced, well-written, and well-sung. The verdict? Well-rounded to the nth degree.
