Ontario pop newcomer Riley Michaels impresses on “Someone Like You,” the intriguing, closing track on his self-titled, debut EP.
AAccording to the talented Canadian musician, 🎙 Riley Michaels, 🎵 “Someone Like You” “is about that special someone, and the super deep adoration you feel for them… [it] is an opportunity to tell them that you love and appreciate the hell out of them.” Sounds good to me, Riley. Even better, “Someone Like You” turns out to be a truly marvelous, ear catching record, one that everybody should totally hear. It appears on the 20-year-old’s 💿 self-titled, debut EP. “Someone Like You” was written by Michaels, 🎼✍ Andre Kaden Black, and 🎼✍ Tal Vaisman.
“Someone Like You” can be characterized as a soulful, bluesy pop single. Given the ripe, prominent guitars used within the production, you could even assert that there’s a hint of country. Furthermore, there’s an ample dose of retro, which reflects the influences of some of his favorite musicians – John Mayer, Prince, and Elvis Presley. Regardless of the eclecticism exhibited, listening to this impeccably penned joint, genre doesn’t matter in the least.
Riley sounds fantastic, period – he’s filled with potential. He sings with incredible authenticity and sincerity, truly making the listener believe what he’s selling on this four-and-a-half-minute gem. His tone is utterly sublime with his performance filled with expression and nuance as he tackles the ever-relatable topic of matters of the heart. The best moment, unsurprisingly, is the chorus, where Michaels truly “brings it on home.”
Final Thoughts 💭
If you need ‘fresh blood’ – rather – fresh music in your listening rotation, look no further than Riley Michaels, specifically, “Someone Like You.” Michaels shows himself to be fresh, young talent with plenty to offer. “Someone Like You” shines thanks to the production, with some vintage cues, strong, sincere songwriting, and most of all, compelling, nuanced vocals by Riley. Safe to say, this record gets my seal of approval.
