Rick Ross, Rather You Than Me © EpicRick Ross returns hard with “Trap Trap Trap,” the second single from his ninth album, ‘Rather You Than Me.’ Young Thug and Wale assist.

A rarity happened in 2016.  Rick Ross didn’t release a new album! In his defense, he dropped Black Market at the tail-end of 2015, but still, no new Rozay in 2K16! He makes up for it with the release of his ninth album, Rather You Than Me, which arrives March 17.  After dropping the luxurious “I Think She Like Me,” Ross returns with “Trap Trap Trap” featuring Young Thug and Wale.

Expectedly, “Trap Trap Trap” is a banger, souped-up to the nth degree.  The hook latches after one listening, delivered by the Boss himself:

“I took my roof off at the red light
I took my roof off at the red light
Trap, trap, trap, trap, trap, trap
Trap, trap, trap, trap, trap, trap
Brown bag legend ‘cause it’s all cash
Brown bag legend when it’s all cash
Trap, trap, trap, trap, trap, trap
Trap, trap, trap, trap, trap, trap.”

Ross goes on to spit the first verse, which is a testament to toughness – ain’t no fuckboys allowed.  Nothing is brand new here, but he flexes hard over epic, malicious production work.  His flow is tight, and even if the lyrics aren’t inspired, Ross sounds inspired. Trap, trap, trap

Young Thug arrives on the second verse.  According to Thug: “Niggas talkin’ ‘bout raidin’ the trap / Man I’m ‘bout to go ape in the trap.” Okay… Young Thug goes on to warn of the dangers of the trap, having plenty of money (“Wrist in the water, I need a boat”), and being armed and dangerous.  Wale closes “Trap Trap Trap” with an anti-trap sentiment.  Something of an uncharacteristic joint for Wale, he makes it work, clearly contrasting both Wale and Young Thug’s verses:

“I ain’t nothin’ like them trap guys
I mean I kinda do bag dimes
I kinda never do back down
Leave a nigga high via rap lines
Get a beat, leave it baptized
Mob ties, but it’s black lives
Black lives, nigga, trap lives
Gimme five on the black side.”

Final Thoughts

Once again, Rick Ross has an electrifying banger on his hands.  Perhaps “Trap Trap Trap” doesn’t supplant his best, but it certainly builds up anticipation for the quick release of Rather You Than Me.  This is a stark contrast to “I Think She Like Me” for sure, and that’s perfectly okay.
