Rick Ross, Glory of War | Track Review 🎵

Rick Ross returns with a familiar sound and overall vibe on “Glory of War,” assisted by soul singer Anthony Hamilton. 

Rick Ross always seems to be good for a banger.  His 2017 album, Rather You Than Me, had plenty of ‘em.  Like many of his contemporaries, album out or not, Ross continues to release new music.  This time, he returns with “Glory of War,” assisted by soul singer Anthony Hamilton. The question is, where does “Glory of War” fit into his future musical endeavors? Is this a promo single for another album, or what?

“Glory of War,” like many Rick Ross singles, has plenty of pros.  The production work here in particular is rock solid.  It’s lush and incredibly soulful. As Rozay tells it:

“Stevie Wonder on the pianos
Geechi Liberace in the building
Ray Charles on the flute.”

Furthermore, the Boss delivers a compelling flow as always.  He easily navigates the backdrop without any problems.  Anthony Hamilton sounds great, though, unfortunately, he doesn’t sing any specific lyrics.  The role still provides a lift, as Hamilton accentuates the overall vibe.  And as we know, vibe is everything.

Lyrically, “Glory of War” is no masterpiece.  While Ross successfully spits, he doesn’t change the game with his rhymes.  Profundity isn’t the M.O., but he has his moments.  Probably the main offense is that “Glory of War” sounds familiar, hence, not breaking new ground.  By no means is Ross’ flow broken, but predictability perhaps doesn’t help him ascend to the next level.

Final Thoughts

All in all, “Glory of War” is another respectable Rick Ross song.  It has the ingredients that have helped make him a successful musician throughout his career.  The main rub is that there’s a lack of progression – it’s more of the same rather than stretching himself as a rapper.  Still, plenty more to like than to criticize.
