“Walked in, thirty thousand in my pocket / Had them niggas just like, ‘Ooh, ooh, ooh’.” On God! Sadly, on September 5, 2024, Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan died. Quan released one studio album in his career in 2018, Rich As in Spirit.  While the gold-certified “Type of Way”, released in 2013, is cited as his breakthrough, the biggest song of his career was “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)” released in 2015.  “Flex” gave the rapper his sole top 40 pop hit, peaking at no. 26 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Also, “Flex” earned Rich his sole multiplatinum-certified single from the RIAA.  DJ Spinz and Nitti Beatz produced the deceased rapper’s ‘ace-in-the-hole’.

Spinz and Beatz gave Rich Homie Quan a sleek, trap backdrop.  The synths and drum programming catch the ear without overpowering the star of the show.  The accompaniment is a loop which proves highly effective for the style and Rich himself.  From the onset, Rich gives us a compelling, confident flow with memorable rhymes.  The chorus is one of the best parts of “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh),” excerpted above.  It continues, “$50,000 on your bitch, wanna fuck me / Got her screamin’ like, ‘Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh’.” Orgasmic! Rich also drops some lyrical bangers in the verses.  In the first verse, he spits, “In the club and a nigga get it boppin’ / And that ho, she want a free drink, tell the bitch to get up off me… / I’m the nigga to get it poppin’, her hair short like Denis Rodman.” Oh, snap! He’s even more entertaining in the second verse:

“Know this bitch who got a sack, and she always got my back

So, I love that shit the most (I do)

I’m her big dog and she my cat, and she love it from the back

Call her green cause she on go (Green light).”

It’s sad to see Rich Homie Quan gone far too soon.  33 years old (some sources say 34) is too young.  May he rest in peace.  As for his musical legacy, the multiplatinum “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)” endures!
