17-year old Indonesian rapper Rich Brian has definitely been making a name for himself.  Don’t let the age fool you – he’s no bubblegum, childish pop-rapper.  In other words, Rich Brian likes his f-bombs, like any other rapper, regardless of age.  Furthermore, he has an incredibly deep, distinct voice.  And if that wasn’t enough, early on, he’s already offended at the tender, young age of 16.  Following the controversial “Dat $tick,” and star-studded banger “Gospel,” Chigga drops “Glow Like Dat.”

“Glow Like Dat” has its fair share of pros. The production is fitting, given the fact that the song is about an ex.  It’s not nearly as heavy-hitting as “Gospel,” but lighter and more reflective.  Vocally, the deep pipes of Rich Brian continue to shine on his rhymes as well as when he adds some pitch.  It’s not a commanding, intimidating sound or performance, but the tone is much different from his rap colleagues.  All in all, this is a sound performance, even if lacks flashiness.

The cons aren’t deal breaking, as “Glow Like Dat” still has its moments and virtues.  As aforementioned, this isn’t a flashy song or performance.  It’s respectable, and the tone of Rich Brian will always be a pro, but “Glow Like Dat” feels indistinct despite the distinctiveness of its MC.  Exes fueling the fire are commonplace in all genres of music, so Rich Brian doesn’t win any extra points here.  The rhymes have some clever moments, namely the Mac DeMarco reference, but new ground isn’t broken.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, Rich Brian has a decent record on his hands with “Glow Like Dat.” This isn’t a breakout record by any means.  We won’t remember “Glow Like Dat” as a big, notable, or memorable hit from 2017.  The potential is there, but he needs to continue building upon his craft.
