Two unlikely musicians – Rex Orange County and Randy Newman – join forces on a simple, but incredibly pleasant performance of “You’ve Got a Friend in Me.”
Sometimes, it’s the most unexpected collaborations that truly pique your interest. The shocking collab that caught my eye pairs rising alternative singer/songwriter Rex Orange County (Alex O’Connor) and veteran singer/songwriter Randy Newman. Did this pairing ever cross anyone’s mind? Didn’t think so. What exactly do Rex and Randy duet on? The Toy Story classic penned and originally performed by Newman, “You’ve Got a Friend in Me.” According to a tweet by Rex, Newman not only allowed him to cover the song, but also agreed to sing with him. How cool is that?

Rex Orange County and Randy Newman keep things incredibly simple on this duet – the backdrop is comprised solely of piano accompaniment, performed by Rex. Both musicians equally split the portions of the song, trading lines back and forward. Newman sounds gritty and seasoned, with his distinct set of pipes, while Rex sounds boyish and youthful – a great contrast. The only minor rub with this brief, enjoyable performance is the fact that the two never sing together in unison.
Final Thoughts
All in all, Rex Orange County and Randy Newman make a sick pair as they duet the children’s classic. No new ground is covered, but the results are pretty impressive given the simplicity of the song and overall approach by the performers. As for Rex, being so young (20 years old), it’ll be exciting to see what glorious things he does musically. Apricot Princess (2017), his album of originals from 2017, coupled with this pleasantry, seems like only the beginning.
