3 out of 5 stars

Pop newcomer Jordan Fisher introduces himself to the world on self-titled, debut EP, ‘Jordan Fisher’. It isn’t game changing but displays his potential.

Ah, the refreshing nature of fresh blood – that totally didn’t sound right! Anyways,  there’s nothing more exciting than an up-and-coming artist offering contrast and diversity to the playlist.  Alabama singer/songwriter Jordan Fisher is the latest up-and-comer, blending pop and R&B on debut EP, Jordan Fisher.  Savvy title, right? The four-song EP provides a snapshot of Jordan Fisher as an artist.  Clearly, the potential is there.

“All About Us” features the modern bag of pop tricks – an abundance of electronic cues, with urban sensibilities.  The style suits Fisher, who has a pleasant voice, particularly the falsetto.  “All About Us” isn’t game changing – it likely won’t be remembered in the long run – but a respectable, sexy opener.

“Counterfeit” follows a similar script – a dash of hip-hop, contemporary R&B, and electro-pop.  The gimmicks run rampant as Fisher’s vocals are drenched in various effects.  Is it necessary? Probably not, but pop has grown more and more overproduced.  “Counterfeit” would be easier to digest without throwing ever production trick at the listener.  “All About Us” better showcased Fisher’s instrument, with the exception of some sick runs and falsetto.

“All I Wanna Do” features soulful-rhythmic guitar, a sound accompaniment choice.  Cliché/Tried-and-true? Definitely, but coupled with the sexy lyrics and vibes, it’s effective.

“Lookin’ Like That” concludes Jordan Fisher with energy and personality.  A dance joint, it’s a prudent choice, easily trailing only “All About Us” as the best of the EP.  “Lookin’ Like” is slick as everything preceding it.

Final Thoughts

All in all, Jordan Fisher introduces himself to the world on his self-titled EP.  He doesn’t reinvent pop in the least, but he doesn’t set it back either.  Essentially, Fisher is content to adhere to contemporary pop standards, “for better or for worse.”  Nothing here quite propels Fisher to the “breakthrough artist” list, but the potential is apparent without question.
