Reuben Gray, Till the Lights Go Out [Photo Credit: Reuben Gray]Gifted, rising 17-year old English pop musician Reuben Gray delivers an electrifying, ‘must-hear,’ debut single, “Till the Lights Go Out.”

Remember this name: Reuben Gray.  Gray is a ‘must-hear,’ 17-year old pop artist from England.  If his debut single, “Till the Lights Go Out” foreshadows what is to come, you’ll be hearing plenty about English wunderkind in the future.  Influenced by a number of diverse artists such as Prince, John Coltrane, Post Malone, and The 1975, Gray definitely isn’t your ordinary teenager by any means.  The gifted multi-instrumentalist is cooking up greatness in the studio, working with top-notch producers and songwriters including producer John Nathaniel.  The fruits of his labors definitely pay off on “Till the Lights Go Out.”

Reuben GrayPerhaps the first thing that stands out about “Till the Lights Go Out” is the sleek production work.  Early on, magnificent, moody vibes are established, instantly catching the ears’ attention. This brilliant backdrop includes superb drum programming and the use of piano.  Beyond the instrumental in all its glory, there’s Reuben, who shines like a beacon. His vocals are absolutely lovely; he is expressive in his delivery, and flaunts a gorgeous tone.  Furthermore, Gray is lifted by superb vocal production, particularly during the chorus section.  Speaking of sections, the form of “Till the Lights Go Out” is relatively straightforward – verse, pre-chorus, chorus, and post-chorus. The pre-chorus easily gets stuck in one’s head, particularly the repeated “hey, hey”:

“Hey, hey

She got that Gucci

Hey, hey

Diamond studded phone

Hey, hey

I know you’re lonely

Girl I’ll take you places

I could show you so much more.”

Reuben GrayGucci? Diamond-studded phones? According to Gray, “Till the Lights Go Out” “is my answer to our generations constant quest for acceptance and the need to be validated by our peers. I want to show that you don’t need the most expensive clothes, the latest mobile phone or even hundreds of likes on your profile picture to be happy. All you really need is to find that one person who likes you for who you really are.”

Keying back into the song, like the pre-chorus, the chorus is well-performed, catchy, and ultimately, memorable.

“I just wanna love you till the lights go out

I promise to give it all girl I’ll make that vow

I could be falling

I could be drowning

I don’t really care

I don’t really care

I just wanna love you till the lights go

Lights go

Till the lights go

Out.”
