Regina Spektor, Remember Us to Life © SireAfter singing about her “Bleeding Heart,” singer/songwriter Regina Spektor returns with an electrifying second single, “Small Bill$.”

Previously, singer/songwriter Regina Spektor introduced us to her “Bleeding Heart.” “Bleeding Heart” served as the first single from forthcoming album, Remember Us to Life. Once more, Spektor teases us with another compelling song, “Small Bill$.”

“Small Bill$” captivates from the jump. It features an exceptional percussive groove that’s clearly distinct. In addition to the beat, the harmonic progression is interesting, sporting quirks that make it clever. The sound of the record is definitely a selling point.  It is a cross between alternative, pop, soul, jazz, and hip-hop. Hip-hop and Regina Spektor? Yes, and it actually works.

Other than the sound, another brilliant aspect of “Bill$” are Spektor’s nonsensical vocals.  The “la las” are irresistibly delicious! The verse vocals embrace that hip-hop sensibility given their rhythmic nature.  Lyrically, Spektor isn’t shabby in the least. Among the crème de la crème is:

“All the poets in the alley coughing up blood

And their visions and their dreams are coming up

They can neither wake up or go deeper

But it’s so dangerous to wake a deep sleeper”

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, “Small Bill$” is clever like most Regina Spektor songs. Well produced, “Bill$” features an assortment of lush, creative sounds and effects. As always, Spektor’s vocals are excellent. While this record differs from previous records, it’s well-rounded by all means.
