She’s back! Who? 36-year-old singer/songwriter/pianist Regina Spektor, that’s who! After a five-year hiatus (What We Saw from the Cheap Seats, 2011), Spektor returns with Remember Us to Life, due at the end of September.  Leading the charge for the album is single, “Bleeding Heart.” Will partaking of “Bleeding Heart” make your own heart bleed? No, but it will warm your heart, making you happy that R.S. has returned.

“Bleeding Heart” opens with Spektor’s vocals from the jump. Vocally, she sounds clear and pleasant.  During the chorus in particularly, the lightness of Spektor’s vocals is beautiful and desirable, not to mention the upper register.

“Never, never mind bleeding heart, bleeding heart…”

While her vocals are relaxed throughout the majority of “Bleeding Heart,” Spektor “digs in” towards the end, a sound contrast. In addition to such thoughtful vocals, the production is essentially clutter-free.  There is just the right amount of instrumentation and sounds.  The incorporation of the piano is beautiful, if expected, while the strings provide lushness and intensification.

Final thoughts

All in all, “Bleeding Heart” is creative and out of the box. It marks the standard for Spektor, who doesn’t mind being nonconformist musically.  That said, “Bleeding Heart” doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but easily distinguishes itself from everything else. Spektor delivers a solid vocal performance, excellent production, and sound songwriting.
