The Geto Boys have a famous song called “Damn it Feels Good to Be a Gangsta.” Lifting off that famous title, let’s alter it to say “damn it must feel good to be Drake.” Eight weeks. That’s how long Views has been no. 1 on the Billboard 200. Views moved 124,000 more units, with roughly 27% of that total being pure sales.
This week’s victim of getting their butt kicked by Drake is veteran rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers. Anthony Kiedis and company put up an excellent fight, but still, it wasn’t enough. The Getaway settles for no. 2 on the Billboard 200 with a respectable 118,000 units, with nearly 92% of that total pure sales. It’s not surprising that the Peppers sold well traditionally – many veteran acts do. The numbers are down from previous albums, but considering the gaps between Peppers albums, those numbers are sound.
With Drake and Red Hot Chili Peppers hogging the spotlight, two more albums joined the Billboard 200. YG is Still Brazy at no. 6 to the tune of 38,000 units (~74% pure sales). Those numbers are down considerably from YG’s debut, My Krazy Life. Mumford & Sons’ EP Johannesburg bows at no. 9 with 36,000 units, most of which are sales.
The rest of the top 10 is “old hat,” at least considering the acts positioned there have previously been there at some point or just last week. The most notable news is that Radiohead’s A Moon Shaped Pool reenters at no. 5. Meghan Trainor gets a lift, as Thank You closes out the top 10 this week. Last week’s newbies are nowhere to be found (Nick Jonas’ Last Year Was Complicated and Jon Bellion’s The Human Condition), meaning they fell out of the top 10.
Shifting to the Billboard Hot 100, Drake also continues to rule to roost. According to Billboard, “One Dance” has now spent seven nonconsecutive weeks at no. 1. Drake’s closest competition continues to be Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” “Feeling,” of course, debuted at no. 1.
So, who’s got next on the BB200 next week? His name begins with a “D” and ends in an “R-A-K-E.” While Drake doesn’t seem like he’s budging, The Avett Brothers True Sadness should make a least a dent in the top 10…shouldn’t it?
