“Someday, I’m your ex and I’ll text you, ‘Say less’ / And all you wanna do is cry, remember you said…” It took six years for alternative rock band Rainbow Kitten Surprise to return with their fourth studio album, Love Hate Music Box, released in 2024. Notably, in 2022, lead vocalist and guitarist Ela Melo came out as a trans woman. She sounds fabulous on “Superstar”, the 15th track from Love Hate Music Box. She penned “Superstar” with Daniel Tashian and gnash (Garrett Nash) of “I hate u, I love u” fame. Tashian, Melo, and Konrad Snyder produced it.
“Superstar” is a superstar track for many reasons. The ripe guitars shine, while a strong groove provides a mighty anchor. Again, Ela sings superbly, delivering the rhythmic melodies like a champ. “Telling me we’re meant to be, it’s like we cracked the code,” Melo sings in the second verse, and adds, “I lost the key and, baby, I bought everything you sold me.” Word. Relatable to the nth degree. The chorus is big, serving as one of the brightest spots.
“Well, you told me you loved me, baby
I’m your superstar again
I was always gonna win
I was so above the rest
In your eyes, in your mind
In your heart, in your head
I’m your superstar
I’m your superstar
I can’t be nothing less.”
The tuneful melody and memorable lyrics make the chorus shine. Beyond the centerpiece, the bridge marks another bright spot. “Someday when it counts / I’m gonna beat the buzzer, babe,” she sings, and continues, “The scream is because of me / Do you remember when you told me.” “Superstar” is a winner from Rainbow Kitten Surprise.
