Rae Sremmurd returns with another single, “Chanel,” ahead of their triple album. Swae Lee and Slim Jxmmi tap the ubiquitous Pharrell Williams for the assist.
Southern rap duo Rae Sremmurd seem to be everywhere in 2018. Safe to say, Swae Lee and Slim Jxmmi aren’t hurting for work. The duo is supposedly preparing a triple album – that’s a lot of Rae Sremmurd. On their latest single, “Chanel,” they tap another ubiquitous music being – Pharrell Williams.
“Chanel” features a hard-hitting beat, as well as menacing, minor-key production. Slim Jxmmi is mostly in charge of the hook, though Pharrell provides some pitched ad-libs, that are specifically sung in falsetto. Ultimately, it’s ultra-repetitive, but relatively catchy. Slim Jxmmi goes on to rap the first verse, while Swae Lee follows on the second. Both verses are okay, but nothing game changing happens. The most interesting verse comes from Pharrell on verse three. He quasi-sings the first half of his verse, before dropping straight rhymes, then pop-rapping in a lower register. Ultimately, it’s quirky, yet not far-fetched for him.
Final Thoughts
All in all, Rae Sremmurd don’t really accomplish much on “Chanel.” As insinuated earlier, Slim Jxmmi and Swae Lee don’t have much to say on their verses. At least Pharrell’s verse is intriguing, even if it’s quirk-central. “Chanel” is okay, but that’s about the size of it.
