Theme & Lyrics ✍ 

“I need you to get me off / I’m a bomb gettin’ ready to explode.” Wow! So, while living, would the late, great 🎙 Prince have decided to release his 2019 posthumous album, 💿 Originals? Personally, I don’t think so, but I can’t speak for him.  Regardless, Originals was released giving listeners music that they’ve never heard from the once-in-a-lifetime artist and visionary.  Listening to Originals, one continues to be in awe of what Prince Rogers Nelson had to offer musically.  That said, we all came to this specific column for one thing and one thing only: SEX.  With Prince, particularly his music from the 1980s and 90s, you know The Purple One gives us plenty of sex.

“I’m a sex shooter / Shootin’ love in your direction,” Prince sings on 🎵 “Sex Shooter”, the opener from Originals.  He continues singing, “I’m a sex shooter / Come and play with my affections.” Woo! If the marvelous “Sex Shooter” sounds somewhat familiar or gives those nostalgic 80s vibes, that’s because it was recorded by 🎙 Apollonia 6 back in 1984 (💿 Apollonia 6).  Of course, it was Prince who penned and produced the record for the short-lived group.  It’s fitting he recorded a version himself, right? What makes “Sex Shooter” shine is the sleek, rhythmic synths, the signature groove Prince is renowned for, as well as his lead vocals, filled to the brim with personality.  Of course, the reason why it’s highlighted on After Dark 🕛 🌃 is the SEX. “I need you to pull my trigger baby,” Prince sings in the naughty second verse, adding, “I can’t do it alone / I need you to be my main play thing pillar of stone.” Day-um!

Final Thoughts 💭 

Prince has recorded far more explicit, sexually charged songs than 🎵 “Sex Shooter”.  Even so, it’s hard to deny the innuendo that The Purple One serves up.  Anytime that sex and shoot are used simultaneously, it’s clear matters of the bedroom – or whatever place you choose to ‘make it do’ – is the modus operandi.
