A stunning piano-accompanied interpretation of the spiritual “Mary Don’t Weep” provides further support for the absolute genius of the late, great Prince.
Cutting straight to the chase, there will be a new Prince album in 2018. That news was confirmed on what would’ve been ‘The Purple One’s’ 60th birthday. Piano & a Microphone 1983 arrives September 21, 2018. Listeners were treated to a surprising advance single, “Mary Don’t You Weep.” Still – think about it – isn’t it hard to believe we are talking about posthumously released music from Mr. Nelson? # Still in Mourning.
Why is “Mary Don’t You Weep” surprising? It’s a traditional spiritual, often performed in church. Furthermore, it’s NOT an original, something we usually don’t associate with Prince. All that considered, this spirited performance certainly makes the spiritual feel like it was composed or at least totally transformed and tweaked by the Purple One. Think of this as a ‘testament’ to his artistry – the total musician. His voice is bluesy and fierce, chocked-full of grit and nuances. His piano skills are arguably more impressive than previously noted – and that’s truly saying something. Everyone knows how accomplished he was but hearing him in a more intimate setting amplifies that even more.
Final Thoughts
Like any other Prince performance or song, “Mary Don’t You Weep” leaves you speechless. While it’s a terrific spiritual – among my personal favorites – the Purple One adds even more magic, taking it to another place. There’s really not much else to say but man, how sad it is that this truly blessed, gifted man is no longer with us. At least the memories and the music live on forever and ever.
