On the 67th edition of 5ive Songs (2021), we select five songs that are associated with pressure in some form or fashion.
W
elcome to 5ive Songs, where we keep things short and sweet β no extra calories or needless fluff! Thereβs a theme/topic, five songs, and a short blurb. Yes, itβs a playlist, but itβs a miniature playlist that shouldnβt take much time to consume. On the 67th edition of 5ive Songs (2021), we select five songs that are associated with PRESSURE in some form or fashion. Okay, letβs get into it!
1. Nas, βThe Pressureβ
Kingβs Disease II β’
Mass Appeal β’
2021
βThe pressure weigh a ton, itβs gettinβ too heavy / Had to inspire them again like I didnβt already.β Woo!
Grammy-winning rapper
Nas commences
Kingβs Disease II superbly with
βThe Pressure.β Heβs backed by excellent production courtesy of
Corbett and
Hit-Boy. From the onset, the rapper is on autopilot, dropping numerous lyrical gems. βReal ones still around, release the confetti,β he continues spitting on the chorus, adding, βGodβs Son across the belly.β
Among the best lines Nas reference throughout are his βfitness aspirationsβ:
βThe world on my shoulders, itβs been gettinβ too heavy I been bench pressing the problems, ainβt even get sweaty.β
And if that isnβt sufficient, the rapper goes on to add, βMiles on my Peloton, I been working on my core.β Of course, itβs not all fitness! Nas is reflective throughout βThe Pressure,β also referencing family, society, and, of course, various pressures weighing him down.
2. The Killers, βPressure Machineβ
Pressure Machine β’
Island β’
2021
βBut the Kingdom of God, itβs a pressure machine / Every step, gotta keep it clean.β True, particularly in the context of
Pressure Machine, the seventh studio album by
The Killers.
βPressure Machineβ arrives as the penultimate (and title) track. The five-minute-long record, like most of the album, examines the plight of life living in a small, conservative town that lacks much opportunity β working class. Listening to βPressure Machine,β as well as the album in its entirety, you feel the pressure.
Even with ample pressure, βPressure Machineβ is a well-written, sincere number that successfully serves as the soundtrack to many American towns. Brandon Flowers impresses from a vocal perspective, channeling the right emotions to sell it.
βKeep the debt cloud off the kids Only sunshine on their lids Jiminy Cricket and Power Wheels And memories of Happy Meals.β
3. Logic, βNo Pressureβ
No Pressure β’
Def Jam β’
2020
βNo Pressureβ sets the tone of
No Pressure, the purported final studio album by
Grammy-nominated rapper
Logic, perfectly. Worth noting, βNo Pressureβ features narration via an
Orson Welles sample. This introduces the album.
Logic drops one verse chocked-full of bars. He raps masterfully over old-school, lush production from No I.D and
Like. Notably, he manages revisits his rough and tumble past. Also, he exhibits ample βbig dick energyβ with lines like, βLogic fallinβ off is an obscenity / Top five I better be, steadily / Dogginβ these bitches like Iβm a Pedigree.β Worth noting, Logic released his mixtape,
Bobby Tarantino III (2021) after βretiring,β so, the rapper isnβt out of the music scene just yet!
4. Muse, βPressureβ
Simulation Theory β’
Warner β’
2018
βDonβt push me / Donβt push me / Let me get off the ground / To you Iβm not longer bound.β Okay
Muse β specifically
Matthew Bellamy β whatever you say!
βPressureβ, a standout from
Simulation Theory, features groovy vibes from the jump. The brass hits, combined with the biting guitar, provide a kick-ass listening experience from the
Grammy-winning rock band.
Although set in a minor key, βPressureβ features some major key moments. Pummeling drums add intensity to the ear-catching start. Bellamyβs vocals are solid, incorporating full voice and falsetto. The lyrics are intense, including highlights such as, βIβm grinding it out, no one can see /The pressureβs growing exponentiallyβ and, βI see your corruption / Iβm not blind / Iβll carry the burden and take the strain / And when I am done, I will make you pay.β Also, worth mentioning, are the awesome whispered vocals during the pre-chorus, singing the titular lyric. Ultimately, βPressureβ thrives off those symphonic, neo-prog rock vibes that Muse has been known for over the years, while also incorporating pop elements.
5. Kendrick Lamar, βThe Art of Peer Pressureβ
good Kid m.A.A.d city β’
Interscope β’
2012
βEverybody, sit yo bitch-ass down / And listen to this true motherfuckinβ story / Told by Kendrick Lamar on Rosecrans, ya bitch.β
βThe Art of Peer Pressureβ (
good Kid m.A.A.d city) commences with an intro by
Grammy/Pulitzer Prize winner
Kendrick Lamar that transforms into soulful, lush West Coast production. The vibe is stoner-like for sure. Following the βchorusβ (βSmokinβ on the finest dopeβ¦β), the production (
Tabu) on K-Dotβs first true verse changes, accelerating the tempo and opting for a more hip-hop oriented sound. You could say, the first verse occurs during βPart IIβ of the record.
βLook at me, I got the blunt in my mouth Usually, Iβm drug-free, but, shit, Iβm with the homies.β
The unpredictability of the cut parallels the βunpredictabilityβ of peer pressure β the things peers urge you to do ultimately. As expected, an outro, which follows four total verses, details getting high (βYeah we finally got that nigga fadedβ¦β). βThe Art of Peer Pressureβ is another gem from the album that the Recording Academy wrongfully snubbed.
