Post Malone, Psycho © RepublicFresh off of his “rockstar” success, Post Malone has more pop-rap gold on his hands with “Psycho,” featuring the ever-popular collaboration king, Ty Dolla $ign.

22-year old rapper Post Malone had a great year in 2017.  His single, “rockstar,” was ubiquitous to say the least.  While I personally liked the single, I found it to be overplayed and overrated.  Nonetheless, it was enjoyable.  Once again, PM has gold on his hands with “Psycho.” He gets an assist from extremely popular collaborator, Ty Dolla $ign.

“Psycho” opens mysteriously with an instrumental intro. Once Post Malone enters, singing the hook, everything settles in. The hook is wordy, yet like Malone’s hooks of the past, irresistible.

“Damn, my AP goin’ psycho, lil’ mama bad like Michael / Can’t really trust nobody with all this jewelry on you / My roof look like a no-show, got diamonds by the boatload / Come with the Tony Romo for clowns and all the bozos / My AP goin’ psycho, lil’ mama bad like Michael / Can’t really trust nobody with all this jewelry on you / My roof look like a no-show, got diamonds by the boatload / Don’t act like you my friend when I’m rollin’ through my ends, though.”

As a whole, “Psycho” is comprised of the melodic, pop-rap associated with the Post Malone. All in all, as evidenced by the hook, the execution is sound. The production work is light and mellow in quality. A relatively simple palette of sounds – keyboard, synths, and sleek drum programming – is utilized.  Ty Dolla $ign contrasts Post Malone with his coarser, more gruff vocals on the third verse of “Psycho.”

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, “Psycho” is hypnotic and infectious.  Personally, this record is better than anticipated.  That’s saying something from a more casual Post Malone listener.
