Maybe Lainey Wilson said it best:  “Country’s Cool Again”.  Everybody and his brother and sister seem to be hopping on the country music train in 2024. Chugga-chugga choo-choo!  Post Malone (Austin Post) is the latest to embrace the genre, already securing a no. 1 hit with “I Had Some Help” with Morgan Wallen.  He follows up the dominant cut with his second single from F-1 Trillion (arrives August 16, 2024), “Pour Me A Drink”.  On “Pour Me A Drink,” he enlists veteran country musician Blake Shelton for the assist. Post, John Byron, Jordan Dozzi, Rocky Block, and producers Louis Bell and Charlie Handsome penned this archetypical country joint.

The backdrop is country through and through with guitars (including steel guitar), keys, fiddle, and a standard rhythm section.  It is sound but not surprising or out of the ordinary.  The songwriting is narratively driven, with bad luck fueling the inevitable – drinking.  Post Malone sings the first verse, with his signature vibrato intact. Blake Shelton provides contrast in the second verse, sounding the best fit for the style, expectedly.  Post-verse, Post drops the tuneful chorus (and post-chorus), the song’s best part, though a bit wordy.

“Somebody pour me a drink, somebody bum me a smoke

I’m ‘bout to get on a buzz, I’m ‘bout to get on a roll

Yeah, I been breakin’ my back just keepin’ up with the Joneses

Y’all know what I mean, and y’all know how it goes

When it’s up on a Friday and I’m paid, slide one over my way

I can’t even think when I can hear one callin’ my name

Somebody pour me a drink

Pour me a drink.”

cheersYeah, I’m drunk reading the lyrics and listening.  There’s one final verse, performed mostly by Post Malone but Shelton joins for the final line. Then, guess what happens? Blake sings the chorus, and then, both sing, trading lines.  It ends on the corny side with an outro about – you guessed it – pouring that damn drink.  “Pour Me A Drink” is enjoyable enough.  It bears similarities to “I Had Some Help” though not quite as catchy.  It is respectable but nothing groundbreaking or innovative.
