Post Malone, Stoney © RepublicUp-and-coming rapper Post Malone steps up his game on new single “Déjà vu,” which features pop superstar Justin Bieber.

Post Malone first earn attention with single, “White Iverson.” Some loved it, while others – like Earl Sweatshirt – panned it.  Regardless, the up-and-coming 21-year old rapper returns with a new single, “Déjà vu,” which is set to appear on his forthcoming album, Stoney. Likely, at least by our estimations, more folks will be on board with “Déjà vu,” which features pop superstar Justin Bieber.

“Déjà vu” features psychedelic production initially, thanks to an organ patch. Overall, the production work is solid. “Déjà vu” ends up being a sex-oriented single, but benefits from being more suggestive as opposed to explicit.  Malone delivers agile rhymes. Honestly, his flow is “tight” in this setting, mixed with elements of pop-rap/pitched vocals.  No, he’s not an elite MC per se – at least not yet – but contextually he’s on-point.

“Girl this a confession, I’m not like your exes / I came in from Texas, and now that we textin’ / you can fly in whenever, now you undressin’ / panties on the dresser, your hair getting’ messed up.”

Justin Bieber appears on the hook, with Malone also singing/pop-rapping on the second half.

“Tell me is that déjà vu? / cause you want me and I want you? / Tell me is that déjà vu? / Cause baby it ain’t nothing new, no…”

Bieber delivers sound vocals on both hook and a guest verse. He’s perfectly suited for this type of record – lush and sexy.  Bieber and Malone split the bridge, again highlighting a successful collaboration.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, “déjà vu” is a more successful than anticipated.  The collaborative effort between Post Malone and Justin Bieber works soundly, with both complementing each other stylistically.  Maybe it’s a guilty pleasure, but Post Malone has something going here… something.
