Post Malone enlists Roddy Ricch for the enjoyable though not groundbreaking “Cooped Up,” which appears on Malone’s fourth studio album.
Well, we know one thing for sure: 🎙 Post Malone has “been feelin’ cooped up.” Woo! The singer and melodic rapper returns with a new single that precedes his fourth studio album (💿 Twelve Carat Toothache), 🎵 “Cooped Up”. All in all, “Cooped Up” has all the things you expected from a PM single, including his unique vibrato and signature vocal stylings. He commences the record with a brief intro, followed by a memorable chorus. From there, he delivers the first verse over smooth production (Malone and 🎛 Louis Bell). If nothing else, the sound or the record is a V-I-B-E.
“Yes, I’m off the Bud Light, not the bourbon.” In the first verse, Post drops an agile, confident flow. His bars are colorful and entertaining, the expectation from the artist. One line that stands out is, “Police show up at my door with a warrant… / I remember flushin’ somethin’ down the toilet / Guess you gotta let me get off with a warnin’.” My, my, my! There are also pop cultural references, including a killer 🎙 OutKast reference. Of course, Post isn’t the sole artist gracing “Cooped Up”. Another melodic rapper, 🎙 Roddy Ricch, performs the second verse.
“Shit, gotta pull up
Pull up, I’ma pull up
I pull up, ayy
Got black minx all on the rug, woah, woah
Got hella hes poppin’ drugs, woah, woah.”
Ok… Honestly, I found it to be a bit odd, at least, initially. Once Ricch settles in, he improves, but still, it’s different. Post, of course, does solid doing the heavy lifting, including a bridge that precedes the final chorus.
Final Thoughts 💭
All in all, “Cooped Up” is enjoyable. Is it the best Post Malone single ever? No. It’s certainly not Roddy Ricch’s finest moments, but hey, it worth spinning!
