Scanning the Charts β Billboard 200 & Hot 100 (1/9/21): Playboi Carti debuts at no. 1 on the Billboard 200 with Whole Lotta Red.
SCANNING THE CHARTS is just what it says it is. I, the quirky founder and do-it-all at The Musical Hype scans through the Billboard Charts and picks out things that catch my eye. To reiterate what I said last week (Taylor Swift Easily Holds Off Paul McCartney), this column wonβt be extensive, but rather short and sweet, keeping that π© moving. This week, I picked out FOUR notable observations π from the Billboard 200 π, and THREE observations π from the Billboard Hot 100 π, with π Playboi Carti debuting at no. 1 on the Billboard 200 with his highly anticipated sophomore album, πΏ Whole Lotta Red.
Billboard 200 π
π If the intro didnβt make it crystal clear, rapper π Playboi Carti earns his first no. 1 album on the Billboard 200 with
π π Lil Durk saw πΏ The Voice debut last week at a tepid no. 46 (following an off-cycle release). Expectedly, this week, it ascends to no. 3 after a full week of sales, streaming, etc.
π Sometimes, the second charting week can be very meh. A prime example is the new π Paul McCartney album, πΏ McCartney III, which free falls from no. 2 to no. 37 in its second week.
π Worth noting, in a very quiet week on the charts, there are numerous reentries. Among them are π Frank Ocean (πΏ Blonde, no. 134), π Maluma (πΏ Papi Juancho, no. 163) and π Justin Bieber (πΏ Changes, no. 176).
Billboard Hot 100 π
π π SZA debuts at no. 38 on the Hot 100 with her latest single, π΅ βGood Days,β which arrived on Christmas Day.
π Given their performance on the Billboard 200, itβs not surprising to see π Playboi Carti and π Lil Durk chart several new songs on the Hot 100. Cartiβs highest charting newbie is π΅ βSlay3rβ (no. 72), while Durkβs highest charter is π΅ βStill Trappinββ with the late π King Von at no. 53.
