If you’re in need of a surefire vibe, look no further than “Where you are,” the excellent new PinkPantheress single featuring WILLOW.
Ladies and gentlemen, musicians like PinkPantheress represent the future, no cap! Critics raved over her 2021 tape, To Hell Will It (it has a Metacritic score of 86). She’s back with a new single,
“Where you are”. It’s not just her either – she’s joined by
WILLOW, who is on an upward trajectory. Clearly, those “Whip My Hair” days are far behind the youngest member of the Smith family.
“Where you are” is a bop, period. The production is brilliant courtesy of PinkPantheress,
Skrillex, and
Mura Masa. That’s a formidable team there. Vocally, PinkPantheress is modest but that’s part of her charm. She never gets too high, nor does she need to. Her bedroom / indie pop speaks for itself sans a powerhouse presence with gospel histrionics. WILLOW provides awesome contrast as she’s a more dynamic vocalist with her own distinct sound. I love her tone when she collaborates with PinkPantheress in the pre-chorus and chorus (“Now my life’s a downward spiral, got my broken heart…”). WILLOW gets her shine on during the second verse, even sneaking in an f-bomb: “So many hopes, so many dreams / No, it isn’t what it fuckin’ seems.” Woo! So, what’s the big thematic takeaway? Heartbreak – those pesky matters of the heart!
Final Thoughts
So, how good is
“Where you are”? Very, very good by estimations. Honestly, there’s a hypnotic, mesmerizing quality about this record and PinkPantheress in general. Enlisting WILLOW as a featured guest is nothing short of genius. Again, Willow Smith has evolved from her past, and I’m loving the results. This two-and-a-half-minute single is a must-hear, period.
