Pop vet P!nk returns with her third single, “Whatever You Want,” a week ahead of her highly-anticipated, seventh studio album, ‘Beautiful Trauma.’
It took five-long-years for P!nk to return with a solo album. Fans have been waiting since 2012, when she dropped The Truth About Love. Now, 38-year old Alecia Moore drops Beautiful Trauma on October 13, 2017. Comeback single “What About Us” ended up being thoughtful, reflective, and hard-hitting, if underrated commercially. Second single, “Beautiful Trauma,” continued to paint the musician as a pop force vocally and artistically. Third and final teaser “Whatever You Want” keeps the hits right on rolling for P!nk.
The pros are ample for “Whatever You Want.” As in the past, there’s a toughness – an unapologetic nature about the performance. In other words, P!nk delivers gritty vocals that pack a punch, and some profanity – at least on the first verse. Even though she cusses a little, it’s nothing too extreme, as she sings:
“Running like a dog / Fighting like I bitch too much / And you just can’t stand it baby / Even when I fall / You don’t seem to give two shits…”
In addition to a consistent, powerful vocal, the production has more of rock-oriented pop sound. Arguably, “What About Us” and “Beautiful Trauma” had a smidge less of this vibe. “Whatever You Want” picks it back up. Some other cool happenings include a dash of parallel minor during portions of the chorus (it’s in a major key) and of course, the chorus itself.
“Even if I say that it’s over now / Even if we want to move on somehow / And just like that we come alive / Whatever you want / Whatever you need /Whatever you do, ah-ah-ah.”
Final Thoughts
All in all, “Whatever You Want” caps off a strong promo campaign for P!nk. None of her singles have made a big splash commercially, unfortunately, but perhaps that ‘just goes with the territory’ of P!nk being past her lucrative prime. Still, as previously stated, at 38, vocally and artistically, she remains a pop force.
