The Perms, ‘Lose Yourself’ | Track Review

Canadian alternative rock band The Perms return strong with fun, melodic single, “Lose Yourself,” the title track from their forthcoming album.   

The Perms have been around for a minute – forming in Canada in 1998! Even so, true to their indie status, the veteran trio are by all means an under-the-radar act.  Nonetheless, The Perms showcase why they should be getting more love on their new single, “Lose Yourself.” Perhaps the song title and the title of their upcoming album isn’t ‘brand-new,’ but The Perms certainly exceed expectations on this fun promo track.

“Lose Yourself” opens mysteriously and quietly, before a wall of guitar and pummeling drums enter in.   The band does a nice job of establishing the chorus at the top of the song, prior to the verses.  This helps add stability and provide a sense of familiarity early on.  The chorus, expectedly, is a gem:

“I know that I want you / That I want you now / I know, that I need you / More than ever now.”

The music possesses an exceptional driving quality throughout the song.  This is accomplished thanks to the guitars, synths, and of course, the drums.  Speaking of synths, they arrive during the chorus following the first verse.  The addition is a lovely one by all means. The use of layering that occurs towards the end of this record is an excellent touch. It represents the build-up and an incredible amount of energy and intensity.  “Lose Yourself” closes superbly with an organ fall.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, “Lose Yourself” is well-produced, catchy, and enjoyable.  The Perms have it going on to say the least.  Although it is a brief single, it packs a respectable punch.  The music video and song share a positive attribute – both do a fantastic job of conveying the element of fun.
