Rising, Philadelphia-bred pop musician Payson Lewis takes things ‘next level,’ returning with his best, most electrifying single yet, “Can’t Go Back.”
Payson Lewis is on a serious roll – that’s exactly what you want to do as you establish yourself in any kind of career really. The Philly-bred pop artist has been building an impressive resume with covers and mash-ups. Smart by all means. Furthermore, he’s been featured on Perez Hilton, Mashable, and Huffington Post – a busy, incredibly talented man. His hustle and his work ethic certainly are both admirable and undeniable. “Can’t Go Back” marks Lewis’ third single of 2018. He previously allured us on “When Love Was Young”, as well as being a totally “Bad Influence”. Both of those singles were awesome, but “Can’t Go Back” marks his best yet.
From the start “Can’t Go Back” has a darker, more enigmatic quality compared to his previous singles. It’s set in a minor key, instantly giving it a moodier vibe. The resulting mysteriousness, is a truly triumphant, welcome contrast, making the already ‘fresh to death’ Lewis that much fresher. Part of it is because it shows his willingness to experiment and not be pigeonholed into one sound. While the unique and dramatic production work is a huge propelling force and selling point, the biggest selling point is Payson himself. The vocals, with some added distortion to further darken the mood and amplify the enigma, are on-point. He comes over as fully invested, delivering an authentic performance that’s emotional, nuanced, and theatrical. He doesn’t overplay his cards, but he ‘brings it on home’ on the chorus, the centerpiece of this gem.
Final Thoughts
Just when you expect one thing from Payson Lewis, he surprises you. That is the mark of true artistry – “expect the unexpected.” Making “Can’t Go Back” even more thrilling is its awesome accompanying music video, which magnificently visualizes the vibe conveyed by the audio itself. All in all, “Can’t Go Back” is an absolutely incredible song by an absolutely incredible artist that people shouldn’t be sleeping on. This record is superbly produced, sung, and written with no true flaws. If you want an example of being ‘in the zone,’ Payson Lewis is clearly in it on “Can’t Go Back.” Bravo.
