The vibes, the vibes, those Throwback Vibez! Throwback Vibez is a column that celebrates awesome songs from the past.  The records that grace this column are older, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re ancient – no fossils 🦴! All genres of music are welcome. In the 173rd edition of Throwback Vibez (2025), we recollect and reflect on “Crazy performed by Patsy Cline and The Jordanaires.

“Crazy, I’m crazy for feelin’ so lonely / I’m crazy, crazy for feelin’ so blue.”
Perhaps I’m mistaken, but it feels like the short-lived country music legend Patsy Cline (1932 – 1963) feels crazy 🤪! Cline collaborated with vocal quartet extraordinaire The Jordanaires Hoyt Hawkins (1927 – 1982), Neal Matthews Jr. (1929 – 2000), Hugh Gordon Stoker (1924 – 2013), and Ray Walker (b. 1934) – on a song for the ages, fittingly titled “Crazy”.  “Crazy” was written by another country music legend: Willie Nelson (b. 1933).  A pop hit, it peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1961. It marked Cline’s sole top 10 hit.

Those pesky matters of the heart fuel “Crazy.” That, my friends, is always sufficient to incite craziness. Continuing singing in the verse, Patsy Cline asserts, “I knew, you’d love me as long as you wanted / And then someday, you’d leave me for someone new.” Ugh, that’s just like a man!  Even though Cline is self-aware about the way her ex moved, she still questions what role she played in the breakup. The craziness is justified given the emotional toll of heartbreak. Cline admits, “I’m crazy for tryin’ and crazy for cryin’ / And I’m crazy for lovin’ you.” Throughout this emotional ballad, she impresses with expressive, sincere, and sophisticated vocals. Her tone is incredibly pure. The Jordanaires up the ante with equally sophisticated backing vocals that add to the lushness.  “Crazy” is hypnotic with its chill, lilting, and relaxed vibes, amplified by a sublime arrangement.  Craziness never sounded better than with dreamy piano, string bass, tasteful guitar chords, a subtle but anchoring drum groove, and those Jordanaires harmonies, sigh. “Crazy” is one of the greatest country songs of all time.  It is the definition of a certified classic!
