Party Ghost & Restless Modern make ‘sweet music’ on their collaborative electronic single, “Free.” Production, songwriting & vocal performance are strong.
“So I come again / Killed the habits that owned me / Got it done cuz you showed me / What I was holding back.” Deep and reflective – just a couple of adjectives to describe the new Party Ghost and Restless Modern collaborative single, “Free.” Restless Modern (producer, singer, and songwriter Jack Kieffer) is at the vocal helm, penning and expressively singing the thoughtful, reflective lyrics that propel “Free.” Party Ghost does his fair share anchoring down the record with awesome production work that includes a terrific beat, a superb build-up of rhythm leading into the chorus, and truly inescapable, ‘in-your-face’ synths that distinguish the chorus from the other sections.
“Free” begins with unsettling sound effects at the onset. This creates a sense of mystery and mood, serving as an awesome start to the record. Beyond the stellar production, sufficiently covered earlier, it’s worth exploring the lyrical content a bit more. Restless Modern’s openness – how personal he gets – really makes “Free” the song that it is. One of his deepest moments, is an expressive variation on the pre-chorus, where he sings:
“It’s nothing new / And I’d give it all for once change to prove / I’ve fucking done what I had to do / I’ve dragged the sun from behind the moon.”
Verifying his lyrics via Genius, of the ‘f-bomb’ line, he reflects,
When you’re going through depressive episodes, it’s important in my opinion not to victimize yourself. I struggled and took the steps that I needed to take in my life (for myself and for others) in order to create my own reality where everything was a little bit better.
Wow – enlightening to say the least. There are other notable moments, all with a personal touch such as “In myself I cried wolf,” and “Since 2013 / I’ve grown so much older.” Clearly, the Harvard Graduate has plenty to offer musically, and judging by his lyrics and his reflections on his lyrics, plenty of insight about life.
Final Thoughts
What more is there to say? Party Ghost and Restless Modern make a great team on “Free.” This is a sound organized electronic record that ups the ante with its genuine, thoughtful lyrics. Boxes are checked off, and it’s smooth sailing for PG and RM.
