1. Gunna & Future, “Pushin P” (Ft. Young Thug)
💿 DS4EVER • 🏷 Gunna Music LLC / Young Stoner Life / 300 Entertainment • 📅 2022
On 🎵 “pushin P”, 🎙 Gunna and 🎙 Future deliver a surefire banger – NO CAP 🔥! Furthermore, this highlight from Gunna’s 2021, no. 1 album, 💿 DS4EVER (Drip Season 4EVER), keeps it real. Just listening to “pushin p,” you can feel the vibe. It’s a musical occasion where vibe is enough to carry the song without being able decipher what Gunna, Future, or featured guest, 🎙 Young Thug are rapping.
Examine the lyrics and what Gunna, Future, and Young Thug are going for makes more sense… sort of. Considering Gunna’s album is called Drip Season 4EVER, “pushin p” serves as a fitting torchbearer. These rappers are pushing the truth and of course, ample drip. Following an intro that shouts out producer 🎛 Wheezy, Gunna and Future kick the first verse off with a B-A-N-G. “Pointers in the Patek and my piece, I’m pushin’ P,” Gunna asserts, with Future following up with, “Copped new hammers for my P, we don’t want no peace.” Woo! There is no shortage of outlandish lines, with one of my favorites being “She not a lesbian, for P, she turn Pesbian 😏 (Pushin’ P, I’m pushin’ P).” My, my, my 😮! As for Young Thug, he’s in a world of his own – what’s new. Watch the music video 🎶📼 for “pushin P” and you have no clue what he’s even spitting. Mostly, it’s ample ‘P’ talk such as, “Okay, bought her a P, not a pill, a Porsche,” and the colorful, “I just fucked a cup of water (I did).” He closes with a KO on this hard-flexing gem: “Take the P out the alphabets, nigga, try to sort it out.”

2. Ari Lennox, “Pressure”
💿 age/sex/location • 🏷 Dreamville / Roc Nation • 📅 2021
“Now I’m on top and now I’m ridin’ sky-high / Don’t need nobody, but I’ll take you down tonight.” Woo! 🎙 Ari Lennox is on fire on 🎵 “Pressure” (💿 age/sex/location), period. Her vocals are sassy and sexy – potent to the nth degree. The big draw is the personality she unleashes, in all its unrepentant sexiness. “So fine and spicy, baby, jump up on this (pressure) / I guess that’s why you like it baby, come and get this pressure,” she sings on the infectious chorus. Besides the chorus, Lennox ‘does the damn thing’ on the verse, proving she’s a surefire, bad chick. “Too fuckin’ hot for all these clothes anyways,” she confidently asserts, continuing, “My body drippin’, boy, but you gon’ have to wait / But when you get it, lick it like a candy cane.” Day-um! Clearly, the sex is through the roof, and we wouldn’t have it any other way!
Although painfully underrated, the R&B singer/songwriter is incredibly talented. The utterly sublime, steamy single was produced by 🎛 Jermaine Dupri, 🎛 Bryan-Michael Cox, and 🎛 Elite. Not only is Ari Lennox is fierce AF on “Pressure,” but so is the backing instrumental, which has a dash of old-school. “Pressure” ranks among the best songs released in 2021.

3. BRELAND, “Praise the Lord” (Ft. Thomas Rhett)
🎵 “Praise the Lord” • 🏷 Bad Realm / Atlantic • 🗓 2022
“Praise the Lord for southern women, Hemi engines, crispy chicken.” Um, sure, 🎙 BRELAND – if you say so! The black country musician represents a new breed of country music. Is it a bit polarizing? Perhaps, but if nothing else, he’s interesting. He collaborates with 🏆 Grammy-nominated country standout 🎙 Thomas Rhett on the laudatory 🎵 “Praise the Lord”. What else does BRELAND praise the Most High for? “East Atlanta, Country Grammar, and my nana.” Again, to him I say, sure…
The colorful chorus, excerpted above, is the first section of “Praise the Lord” the listener hears. Next, BRELAND drops the first verse, which continues the praise. It’s not all Christian of course, as he offers up praise “for my bartender, turns a single into two / We went crazy out there last night, we need saving in this pew.” JESUS! Thomas Rhett enters the fray in the second verse, thankful for his children, his Chevrolet (of course), and “cold beer conversation and broken cowboy boots.” I guess that’s how they do it in country music! The music supporting BRELAND and Rhett is bombastic, energetic, and a blend of hip-hop, pop, gospel, and country. It is something to hear for sure! Tongue-in-cheek to the nth degree, “Praise the Lord” is certainly entertaining if nothing else.

4. Jazmine Sullivan, “Put It Down”
💿 Heaux Tales • 🏷 RCA • 📅 2021
“I was damn near willing to just let him talk to me / Because that shit was out of this world,” R&B standout 🎙 Ari Lennox asserts on 🎵 “Ari’s Tale,” a spoken-word skit from 💿 Heaux Tales, the 2021 🏆 Grammy-winning comeback album from 🎙 Jazmine Sullivan. On the interlude, which sets up our song at hand, 🎵 “Put It Down,” Lennox speaks about the power of the D (“That dick spoke life into me”). From there, Jazmine plays off the power of ‘the D,’ just as Ari expresses in her skit.
Prime examples of pleasure from Sullivan include “He keep me wetter than water” and “He’s so big, call him King Kong.” Oh boy, that’s a lot of BOY! Sorry – couldn’t resist! On “Put it Down,” Sullivan manages to balance her classic, elite, God-given vocals with the more modern, hip-hop-infused R&B sound of the 2010s/20s. Lyrically, “Put it Down” isn’t transcendent (DUH, it’s about D) but it’s certainly stimulating and titillating.
“I can’t help it, it’s a shame what he do to me (Me)
My girls ask me what it is, I say, ‘It’s the D’ (D)
I start going out my mind when he come around (‘Round)
That’s why he gets all my time ‘cause he put it down
He put it down (Put it down, put it down, put it down).”

5. Justin Bieber, “Peaches” (Ft. Daniel Caesar & GIVĒON)
💿 Justice • 🏷 Def Jam • 🗓 2021
“I got my peaches out in Georgia (Oh, yeah, shit) / I get my weed from California (That’s that shit).” There’s nothing profound about either of those lyrics 🏆 Grammy-winning pop superstar 🎙 Justin Bieber sings on his 📉 no. 1 Hot 100 hit, 🎵 “Peaches” and yet, it’s absolutely and utterly infectious to the nth degree. He continues on the golden chorus of this 💿 Justice gem, “I took my chick up to the North, yeah (Badass bitch) / I get my light right from the source, yeah (Yeah, that’s it).” While it seems that Bieber has this fruit-loving number on lockdown all by himself, he enlists the services of 🏆 Grammy winner 🎙 Daniel Caesar and 🏆 Grammy nominee 🎙 GIVĒON.
This isn’t a game-changing record, yet the more you listen, the more you find yourself hypnotized and wooed. In the context of Justice, Bieber loosens up (the profanity on the chill chorus), while still focused on the modus operandi, LOVE. Both Caesar and GIVĒON devote their verses to their respective lovers ❤. “Peaches” is one of 2021’s crowd-pleasers.

6. Little Simz, “Point and Kill” (Ft. Obongjayar)
💿 Sometimes I Might Be Introvert • 🏷 AGE 101 MUSIC / AWAL Recordings Ltd • 📅 2021
British rapper 🎙 Little Simz (Simbiatu Ajikawo) delivered a surefire vibe with her 2021 song, 🎵 “Point and Kill” (💿 Sometimes I Might Be Introvert). She gets the assist from Nigerian, London-based artist, 🎙 Obongjayar (Steven Umoh) Part of what makes “Point and Kill” a vibe is the infectious groove and superb production work by 🎛 Inflo (Dean Josiah Cover). Inflo provides fuel for the fire for both performers to ‘put in work.’ The groove! Those horns! Woo! “Point and Kill” was penned by Ajikawo, Umoh, and Cover.
Obongjayar lays claim to one of the best parts of the song early on – the chorus:
“I do as I want, I do as I like
I no watch face, I no fear nobody, nobody
… Point and kill.”
Little Simz follows up with a lit first verse, which includes traditional English lines as well as highlights her Yoruban roots (“Daddy say he want me to be lawyer, be doctor / Riff raff, kiddi cohn, window shopper / Oh, yeah, fine boy, take away auntie”). The second time, however, she performs the infectious chorus herself, before dropping another tough, groovy verse (“Got the devil tryna tempt me, but I know better /Never been the type to not acknowledge all the signs”). Obongjayar doesn’t disappear! He drops the final chorus and outro. Have I mentioned “Point and Kill” is a certified bop?

7. Miley Cyrus, “Prisoner” (Ft. Dua Lipa)
💿 Plastic Hearts • 🏷 RCA • 🗓 2020
“Prisoner, prisoner, locked up / Can’t get you off my mind, off my mind.” 🎙 Miley Cyrus collaborated with 🏆 Grammy-winning pop artist 🎙 Dua Lipa on 🎵 “Prisoner”, a standout from her 2020 studio album, 💿 Plastic Hearts. On “Prisoner,” Cyrus is turned up, assertive, and definitely brings grit to table. Likewise, Dua Lipa has a dynamic, cutting voice, with the similar ability to deliver rousing performances with incredible nuance. Lipa takes the lead on the first verse while Cyrus reclaims the reins on the pre-chorus, splitting the energetic, memorable chorus with Dua. Then, roles flip flop with Cyrus taking the second verse, Lipa singing most of the pre-chorus, and Cyrus leading much of that unforgettable chorus.
“Prisoner, prisoner, locked up
Can’t get you off my mind, off my mind
Lord knows I tried a million times, million times, oh-woah
Why can’t you, why can’t you just let me go?”
Besides strong, passionate vocals (“I tasted Heaven, now I can’t live without it / I can’t forget you and your love is the loudest”), Cyrus and Lipa get sweet production work courtesy of 🎛 The Monsters & Strangerz and 🎛 watt. Ultimately, Cyrus and Lipa ‘do the damn thing.’ Add passionate lyrics, a minor key, and excellent production and “Prisoner” is a certified bop.

8. Future & Lil Uzi Vert, “Plastic”
💿 Pluto x Baby Pluto • 🏷 Atlantic / Epic • 📅 2020
If you have faith that seven is indeed a lucky and special number, perhaps that’s the reason that 🎵 “Plastic” stands out on 💿 Pluto x Baby Pluto. “Plastic” is the seventh track on the collaborative project by 🏆 Grammy-winning rapper 🎙 Future and 🏆 Grammy-nominated rapper, 🎙 Lil Uzi Vert. From the start, the record is quite a vibe thanks to great production work courtesy of 🎛 London On Da Track. Sigh, that classy orchestral palette backing Future and Lil Uzi Vert is sweet. Also, sweet are the flows by both rappers.
“Yeah, Cartier / Yeah, purple tint / … Yeah, I’m too lit / Yeah, got your bitch…” Yes, Future and Lil Uzi Vert give us mad flows. What they eschew is substance, focusing mostly on drip 💧 and sex 👉👌. Besides being greedy, Future asserts, “Yeah, Coupe dirty / Yeah, the drank dirty / Gotta buy the case,” which also classifies as gluttony (read up on your seven deadly sins, peeps) Later, when he brags, “I got two Glocks on me, K-Ci, JoJo,” a prime example of violence. As for Lil Uzi, he’s not only greedy (“Gettin’ them racks / Yeah, spendin’ them racks”) but lustful, bragging, “I got a bitch for every week and all my bitches freak / I got a bitch for every day of the week.” Dante Alighieri (The Divine Comedy) wouldn’t approve of Lil Uzi Vert and his multiple bitches in any way, shape, or form… at least, we believe he wouldn’t.

9. Sabrina Claudio, “Put on Repeat”
💿 Based on a Feeling • 🏷 SC Entertainment / Atlantic• 📅 2022
And he likes to compare me to wine / Over and over, he tastes me / Only gets better with time.” Woo, gurlll! 🎙 Sabrina Claudio excels at sexy, steamy records. She sounds incredible on 🎵 “Put on Repeat”, which appears on her 2022 album, 💿 Based on a Feeling. As the excerpted lyrics hint, Claudio isn’t referencing putting a song or record on repeat. No, it all comes down to that universal three-letter word!
Over sleek, sensual production by 🎛 Jonah Christian, Claudio is on autopilot from the jump. It is the second verse where things get naughtier. Even so, Sabrina titillates without getting explicit.
“If I could, I would have him for life
Ooh, yes, I’m beggin’
To touch on his perfect design, yeah, yeah, yeah
‘Cause his body is my favorite ride
Over and over, please let me
Off and back on one more time, yes.”
So, basically, he’s hot and great in the sack – got it Sabrina! We totally understand why she wants to “put on repeat.” Who wouldn’t? Furthermore, “Put on Repeat” is worth listening to repeatedly!

10. J. Cole, “p r i d e . i s . t h e . d e v i l” (Ft. Lil Baby)
💿 The Off-Season • 🏷 Dreamville / Roc Nation • 🗓 2021
“Bright lights pass me in the city, it’s emergency / I’m thankful ‘cause I made it past my thirties, no one murdered me.” Woo! On 🎵 “p r i d e . i s . t h e . d e v i l,” a standout from 💿 The Off-Season, 🏆 Grammy-winning rapper 🎙 J. Cole speaks about how pride can be a negative thing.
On the first verse, Cole asserts, “Pride be the reason for the family dichotomy / Got uncles and some aunties that’s too proud to give apologies.” True – FACTS! Of course, a huge selling point is the featured guest: 🎙 Lil Baby. Lil Baby has ‘been on a tear’ and that ‘tear’ continues on the second verse of “p r i d e . i s . t h e . d e v i l.” One of my favorite lines:
“Got my feet up, I paid silly bands to have sex on the jet
I don’t need ‘em, that shit in the past, I’m feelin’ like what’s next.”

11. St. Vincent, “Pay Your Way in Pain”
💿 Daddy’s Home • 🏷 Loma Vista • 📅 2021
Annie Clark, aka 🏆 Grammy-winning singer/songwriter 🎙 St. Vincent, dropped her first new album of the 20s with 💿 Daddy’s Home. Leading the charge is single and opener, 🎵 “Pay Your Way in Pain”. As always, Clark never fails to disappoint. “Pay Your Way in Pain” was written by Clark and 🎼✍ Jack Antonoff. Both musicians produce a unique-sounding record.
“Pay Your Way in Pain” commences with sort of this cabaret sound – throwback in quality. Soon enough, it transforms into this adventurous joint with a blend of funk and electronic cues. This quirky number is alternative through and through. If nothing else, St. Vincent delivers an ear-catching record that doesn’t conform in any way, shape, or fashion. I love the playful ways that she uses her voice here. The songwriting is also intriguing, telling a compelling story, characteristic of the artist’s music of the past. Specifically, the character seems to be facing plenty of pain as the adversity is through the roof from lack of money, being judged, becoming homeless – it’s a lot! “Pay Your Way in Pain” is quirky as albeit and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

12. Prince, “P Control”
💿 The Gold Experience • 🏷 NPG • 📅 1995
“Pussy got bank in her pockets / Before she got dick in her drawers / If brother didn’t have good and plenty of his own / In love pussy never did fall…” Holy fucking moly! 🎵 “P Control” ranks among the most provocative songs of 🎙 Prince’s discography, period. Hailing from 💿 The Gold Experience from 1995, The Purple One – at the time, The Artist Formerly Known as Prince – tells a story where women control men’s brain. Of course, the characters and references are all sexually explicit (“‘Cause I met this girl named Pussy / At the Club International Balls…”).
As filthy as it is, “P Control” is one badass song – one of those underrated gems. The sole rub? It overreaches as far as its explicitness. Regardless, where creativity and artistry are concerned on this lascivious number, Prince’s falsetto on the chorus is untouchable.
“Ah, Pussy Control, oh
Ah, Pussy Control, oh.”

13. Natalie Grant, “Praise You in This Storm”
💿 No Stranger • 🏷 Curb • 📅 2022
“I was sure by now / God, you would’ve reached down / And wiped our tears away / Stepped in and saved the day,” 🎙 Natalie Grant sings on the relatable 🎵 “Praise You in This Storm”, a 🎙 Casting Crowns cover (💿 Lifesong, 2005). In the first verse of this gem from her 2020 album, 💿 No Stranger, Grant wonders why God hasn’t interceded on her behalf – good, reasonable question! Those of us who identify as Christian have been in a similar position where the road is quite rough, and our prayers have yet to be answered. Grant continues this gorgeous, moving Contemporary Christian ballad singing, “But once again, I say ‘Amen’ / And it’s still raining.”
So, what Natalie is saying is, we continue to have faith and praise Him even when it seems it’s not working? THAT’S RIGHT! “Praise You in This Storm” suggests that even when “I barely her You [God] whisper through the rain,” I ALWAYS remain faithful. That’s easier said than done but it’s important to have faith the size of a mustard seed, as ‘The Good Book’ says. Essentially, the Christian walk isn’t an easy one, even with God in your corner. Grant makes it crystal clear on this soaring ballad sure to touch souls worldwide.
“And I’ll praise You in this storm
And I will lift my hands
‘Cause You are who You are
No matter where I am
And every tear I’ve cried
You hold in Your hands
You never left my side
And though my heart is torn
I will praise You in this storm.”
