Outline’s Release Pop Anthem βCandid.β
Contributed by George James
2020 has been a strange year so far. We are witnessing one of the worlds biggest pandemic’s, and it has resulted in many of us stuck in self-isolation. But, it is not all that bad. Especially, now that I can listen to music all day. As a result, I am spending a lot of my time listening to new bands, and one which stuck out to me was Outline.
Reminiscent but not identical to other indie-pop legends, the Birmingham 4 piece have delivered us the goods here. Their new track, βCandid,β is an excellent display of quality, and I could not help but find myself reaching for the repeat button. But, does it tick all of my boxes? Not quite, yet it is not far away.
Vocally, βCandidβ is on point. It is an electrifying performance, although possibly a little cheesy at times. But, that works and I like the happy vibes, it gives off. After all, it is a pop release, and that is what pop lovers crave. Nevertheless, it appealingly crosses genres at times, mainly into the indie realm, and it would not sit out of place on the playlist of your local indie dive too.
The drums are tight, and I enjoy the variance used with the rhythm section. The bass is thumping and fits perfectly with the hard-hitting kick drum. One thing I noticed was the quality of the mix and having played it on many speakers; I could not find any faults with that.
Lack of change within songs is often the pet hate of mine, and this track does provide multiple changes throughout, therefore top marks to the songwriters. The harmonies work well too, although I would have liked to hear a few more of those in various places. Nevertheless, it is a well-built release, and the band will be on my radar for quite some time. I will give it a four out of five – George James.Β
